What does a car do when the timing belt breaks?

Ok, so i know nothing about cars, but my 1995 ford escort just died on me the other day, on the highway with my 3 little girls in the backseat, and the tow truck driver said he thought it was the timing belt/chain, whatever the heck it is. I haven't had anyone look at it yet, because i'm not sure if i can afford to fix it or not. Basically what happened is I was on the highway and all of a sudden the check engine light came on, the car slowed down and i couldn't speed up any, so i pulled to the side of the road, as soon as i put it in park, it died. If anyone know what the heck that sounds like and maybe how much you think it could cost, that would be great! Please though, if you could avoid the great detail with the mechanical language, that would be great..lol...because i will have no idea what you are talking about! thanksWhat does a car do when the timing belt breaks?your engine is like an air/fuel pump it sucks air/fuel in squishes it burns it and pushes it out

when your timing belt breaks the air doesent get sucked throuch corectly as the valves stop openong to let it through

you will get a new belt i recomend a water pump on that car as it is driven bu the same belt and possibly new idler pullies as well

it should cost you under $500

i do them for $300

i hope this helpsWhat does a car do when the timing belt breaks? You need to have it towed to a AAA rated shop of your choice and have an estimate done. If it was the timing belt there is a chance the engine is destroyed, but you need it checked to be sure. If you did not hear any loud noises perhaps you are OK., otherwise the vehicle is junk and is best donated. What does a car do when the timing belt breaks? It depends on whether or not your motor is an %26quot;interference%26quot; motor, if it is then when the timing belt breaks the valves hit the top of the pistons at the very least it would need a new head, if it is not, you put a new timing belt on and your good to go. What does a car do when the timing belt breaks?when your timing belt breaks while you are driving it destroys the engine, unless your car has a non interference engine, your car is finishedWhat does a car do when the timing belt breaks? It ceases to run. What does a car do when the timing belt breaks? The timing belt is a piece of flexible material that will drive the secondary shafts in synchronization with the main crankshaft. This allows the valves and the ignition to work each at the proper time. Depending on the engine design, it may be just a belt replacement, or it may mean that a valve is also damaged. If it is just a belt replacement, it may be $500 to $1000. If it is a damaged valve it could be 3 times that. Only a mechanic can tell you for sure. Depending on the mileage on the vehicle, it may be cheaper to get another one than to repair this one. You need to do some shopping. Good luck. What does a car do when the timing belt breaks?I believe I would look at other things first it could just be a plugged fuel filter if the timing belt broke it would most likely died right away losing power can be a number of things it could be a catalatic converter I would not take the very first thing that pops into someones head have it checked out it could even be a senor it may be some little thing so have a tech look at it not a mechanic there is a diffence a tech finds the problem a mechanic replaces parts. Good luckWhat does a car do when the timing belt breaks?Timing belt is inside a cover on the front of the engine. It operates the intake and exhaust valves. When it breaks the valves dont work and your engine does not work. This belt is replaced based on mileage as outlined in the service schedule of your owners manual. Have someone look at it, replacing the belt may be in the $300+ range, plus any other damage done. For the sake of your girls, please learn something about your car, there is some basic maintenance that needs to be done to be safe, most importantly. Check your tires and tire pressure frequently, brakes etc.
