Might buy a Hyundai Elantra that had the timing belt broken. What does it need?

Might trade a trailer that I have for a Hyundai Elantra that had the timing belt broken. Are the valves definitely smashed? What other work do I need to do other than installing a new belt? How do I get the timing right? ThanksMight buy a Hyundai Elantra that had the timing belt broken. What does it need?As for the poster with the '92 Elantra...that was the old Hyundai.

To the OP...what year Elantra are we talking about? If it's newer than 2000 and you have the money to fix it, I would go for it. However some advice for you.

Hyundai engines are interference engines. When that belt broke, I would bet you the pistons collided with the stationary valves. You'll need to take the head off to make sure but I'm 99.9% positive that's the case. Easily you'll need new valves, perhaps more.

Good luck.Might buy a Hyundai Elantra that had the timing belt broken. What does it need?No answer, just a warning...

We had a lot of problems with the '92 Elantra. It had engine and transmission problems that we found out were common to that year's model. After about '95 or so, they (supposedly) got it worked out, but we've not been willing to try another, since that experience.

Good luck
