How long does it take to change a 2.0 2003 ford Focus SVT timing belt?

How much does it cost to have a new timing belt put in my 2003 hyundai tiburon?

...I heard you were suppose to get a new one around 60,000 miles or something like that. I just need an estimate of how much the belt itself would cost and then how much the labor would be. I was also wondering about around how many miles i should get a full service/maintnence check on it. (brake, spark plugs, tires, hoses, fluids...etc.) and also how much that would cost. If anyone knows, that would be awesome. How much does it cost to have a new timing belt put in my 2003 hyundai tiburon? The dealer will be more expensive then an avg auto shop. I was quoted $500 by the dealer but only $300 by a shop.

The full 60k service could run up to $600 at some dealers but remember you don't have to go to the dealer for service. You will not void your warranty buy going to a certified mechanic. Just save your service invoices.

You should check and replace parts as needed every 60k as the standard but you can refer to your car manual to make sure of maintenance intervals.

Some things like fluids, hoses and belts may require replacing sooner then 60k, fluids especially. Example the transmission fluid should be changed every 30k and not with just any fluid. I could be wrong about the Tiburon but Hyundai's use SP-3.

Your car manual is a good way to find out at what intervals you car needs service.

  • Broke my acura integra timing belt while driving. do I need an engine overhaul?

its a 94 integra ls. stock 4 cyl. engine. I was going 30-40 mph and the engine died. Ive confirmed that the timing belt broke. Did I fry the pistons and cylinders? I paid 3 grand for the car 2 yrs. ago and it will cost me nearly 2 grand to fix it. How do I know if it needs a complete overhaul or just a new timing belt. Any advise would help.Broke my acura integra timing belt while driving. do I need an engine overhaul?According to Gates belt company you, unfortunately, have an interference engine. Meaning that valves will interfere with the pistons if the belt breaks or timing is badly off. There's absolutely no way to guess what might have happenned inside your engine by the speed you were going, etc. Yes, it is a good sign that you didn't hear any gruesome rapping sound when it occurred; but that doesn't tell you everything.

There's two ways to determine the extent of the damage: 1. Pull the head and have a looksee. Compress the valves to see how they fit in their guides and seats. Make sure there is no sharp scoring on the top of the pistons.

    2. Install a new timing belt, set-up the sprockets for the proper timing and rotate the engine manually. Assuming you can freely turn it with no grinding noises, you can now cross your fingers and start the motor for its final inspection.

I have to caution you: #2 is really a stupid way to do things. Setting up the sprockets and everything doesn't take much less time than also pulling the head. And if you do start the engine you risk damaging it further.

Take heart: There still is a chance that you didn't hurt much. It could be as little as nothing to maybe just a bent valve to as bad as a hole in your piston. But you probably needed an overhaul anyway.Broke my acura integra timing belt while driving. do I need an engine overhaul?it depends on the motor some motors have whats called zero tolerance meaning that when the piston is at the top of the stroke there is no clearance between the head and the piston and it will bend the valves if the timing belt breaks ,in any case because of the yr vehicle and the miles on it doing the timing belt alone will not fix it chances are you have bent valves ,you would be better off looking in to a re-manufactured engine and replacing the one that's in there now ,the reason is if you put a new head and timing belt on the motor the bottom end of the motor will go out soon after or the piston rings will for sureBroke my acura integra timing belt while driving. do I need an engine overhaul?Honda/Acura engines are interference type. Timing belt breaks and parts start banging together.

If your lucky, maybe a bent vavle or two.

Worst case is bent valves, holed pistons, broken connecting rods, bent crankshaft, cracked block at main bearing mounts. Worst case your looking at a new engine.Broke my acura integra timing belt while driving. do I need an engine overhaul? It shouldn't cost 2K to fix unless the motor was running at a high RPM and damaged the pistons, connecting rods and head. Most likely you will have to have the valves replaced as well as the timing belt.

They can tell if there is more damage was done when the head is removed to do the valves.

If there is about 200K on the car then you may want to get a lower mileage used motor that has had the timing belt replaced. Unless the rest of the car is in perfect shape, its age doesn't justify a new or rebuilt motor.Broke my acura integra timing belt while driving. do I need an engine overhaul?if i made any weird noises you might need some valve work but if not i dont see why you cant just reajust the timing and put on a new belt.Broke my acura integra timing belt while driving. do I need an engine overhaul? Most likely an entire overhaul. Honda (Acura) engines are %26quot;collision%26quot; type. This means that the valves come down further than the piston goes up. Works when in time. When the timing belt breaks, your camshafts spin out of synchronization of your crankshaft, causing the valves to collide with your pistons, either bending the valves, or your pistons' connecting rods.Broke my acura integra timing belt while driving. do I need an engine overhaul? If there is any damage to the engine it will most likely be in the form of a bent valve. Worst case scenario is new or rebuilt cylinder head should be less than 2 gs.Broke my acura integra timing belt while driving. do I need an engine overhaul?no, but the slow speed may have helped, the biggest problem with breaking a timing belt while running is that the timing belt turns the cam that opens and closes the valves while the pistons are in the proper position, in some cars the valves are so close to the pistons that when the belt breaks it bends the valves or tears up a piston, if you didn't hear a loud clattering sound you probably just need a belt.

How do i figure if the timing belt needs replaced or retimed or if its the distributor ?

my vehicle is a 1996 acura integra ls i broke down the other day in traffic while idleing when my car turns over the timing sounds off i took the valve cover off and the belt itself looks fine and has a tiny bit of slack in it i need to know if this could be the distributor or if i need to reset the timing again? How do i figure if the timing belt needs replaced or retimed or if its the distributor ?Don't think it will be your timing belt,if your motor is cranking over your valve timing shouldnt be too bad.check your log book for replacement intervals for your timing belt.it could possibly be your distributor, crook coil or ignition module.possible fuel supply problem aswell.without looking at it its hard to diagnose.can usupply more info?cheers

How do i know when to change the timing belt?

i have an Acura 3.2 TL, when i bought it, it has 90 000 km on it. Now it has 217 000 km. I never did the timing belt before. Do i have to do it? or did the previous owner already changed it already? How do i know when to change the timing belt?On most overhead cam engines if the belt breaks it will do major damage to the engine because the valves will hit the pistons. Check the owners manuel for the recomended times to change. When in doubt change it anyway, it will be a lot cheaper than a new engine.

If you are mechanically inclined get a repair manuel and change it yourself. Check the timing belt idler for wear, if it goes out it will ruin the belt. On most engines there are other parts that you may want to replace at the same time because of the labor involved in getting to them. (other belts, water pumps, hoses., ect)How do i know when to change the timing belt?Either done or not done... You are do..

Any time from 90,000 and on is Roulette..( changed or not changed)

I'd do it....How do i know when to change the timing belt?some engines have a timng belt cover or covers that you can remove and visually inspect the belt. some covers are a pain to remove thoHow do i know when to change the timing belt?i would say your over do. better change it now or you will be looking at some big bucks later.

How much would it cost to change a honda civic 92 dx hatchback timing belt and alternater belt and water pump?

just wondering how much would it cost me to change a timing belt and water pump on a honda civic 92 dx hatchback. by the way the milelage is about 139***How much would it cost to change a honda civic 92 dx hatchback timing belt and alternater belt and water pump?shouldn't be more than 200. But if you do it yourself, it might be just 50 bucks.

See the answer below. Changing all those parts is a CAKEWALK!!! I've changed PISTON RINGS while parked outside my storage locker, laying on my back in the gravel, when I was homeless. All professional mechanics are THIEVES! 300 dollars, my aass. How much would it cost to change a honda civic 92 dx hatchback timing belt and alternater belt and water pump?Man I gotta get Jersey to work in my shop, hes working for free at the rates he quoting.

Flat rate on your car is 2.8. So it's going to be 300 labor, the water pump is $40 and the timing belt and tensioner (you always replace tensioner it even comes with the new belt) is $70. So your looking at just over $400 for the job.

What does a car do when the timing belt breaks?

Ok, so i know nothing about cars, but my 1995 ford escort just died on me the other day, on the highway with my 3 little girls in the backseat, and the tow truck driver said he thought it was the timing belt/chain, whatever the heck it is. I haven't had anyone look at it yet, because i'm not sure if i can afford to fix it or not. Basically what happened is I was on the highway and all of a sudden the check engine light came on, the car slowed down and i couldn't speed up any, so i pulled to the side of the road, as soon as i put it in park, it died. If anyone know what the heck that sounds like and maybe how much you think it could cost, that would be great! Please though, if you could avoid the great detail with the mechanical language, that would be great..lol...because i will have no idea what you are talking about! thanksWhat does a car do when the timing belt breaks?your engine is like an air/fuel pump it sucks air/fuel in squishes it burns it and pushes it out

when your timing belt breaks the air doesent get sucked throuch corectly as the valves stop openong to let it through

you will get a new belt i recomend a water pump on that car as it is driven bu the same belt and possibly new idler pullies as well

it should cost you under $500

    i do them for $300

i hope this helpsWhat does a car do when the timing belt breaks? You need to have it towed to a AAA rated shop of your choice and have an estimate done. If it was the timing belt there is a chance the engine is destroyed, but you need it checked to be sure. If you did not hear any loud noises perhaps you are OK., otherwise the vehicle is junk and is best donated. What does a car do when the timing belt breaks? It depends on whether or not your motor is an %26quot;interference%26quot; motor, if it is then when the timing belt breaks the valves hit the top of the pistons at the very least it would need a new head, if it is not, you put a new timing belt on and your good to go. What does a car do when the timing belt breaks?when your timing belt breaks while you are driving it destroys the engine, unless your car has a non interference engine, your car is finishedWhat does a car do when the timing belt breaks? It ceases to run. What does a car do when the timing belt breaks? The timing belt is a piece of flexible material that will drive the secondary shafts in synchronization with the main crankshaft. This allows the valves and the ignition to work each at the proper time. Depending on the engine design, it may be just a belt replacement, or it may mean that a valve is also damaged. If it is just a belt replacement, it may be $500 to $1000. If it is a damaged valve it could be 3 times that. Only a mechanic can tell you for sure. Depending on the mileage on the vehicle, it may be cheaper to get another one than to repair this one. You need to do some shopping. Good luck. What does a car do when the timing belt breaks?I believe I would look at other things first it could just be a plugged fuel filter if the timing belt broke it would most likely died right away losing power can be a number of things it could be a catalatic converter I would not take the very first thing that pops into someones head have it checked out it could even be a senor it may be some little thing so have a tech look at it not a mechanic there is a diffence a tech finds the problem a mechanic replaces parts. Good luckWhat does a car do when the timing belt breaks?Timing belt is inside a cover on the front of the engine. It operates the intake and exhaust valves. When it breaks the valves dont work and your engine does not work. This belt is replaced based on mileage as outlined in the service schedule of your owners manual. Have someone look at it, replacing the belt may be in the $300+ range, plus any other damage done. For the sake of your girls, please learn something about your car, there is some basic maintenance that needs to be done to be safe, most importantly. Check your tires and tire pressure frequently, brakes etc.

  • How to adjust timing belt on a 1989 Suzuki Swift GTI DOHC?

Ok, here is the story. My motor mounts slipped on my Suzuki Swift, shredding the timing belt, and shutting the car off immediately. Now that I Have my car home, how do I put the new timing belt on and set it?How to adjust timing belt on a 1989 Suzuki Swift GTI DOHC?Are you sure it's the timing belt? I've never seen a Suzuki Swift engine, but there should be an external drive (serpentine) belt that drives the power steering, a/c, alternator, and maybe the water pump. There is an internal timing belt that you normally cannot see, because it's hidden behind covers. You need to be sure which belt you're referring to. The external belt is easy, and there should be a diagram under the hood that shows how to route the belt. The timing belt requires removing components to access the crank and camshaft pulleys, and then you have to carefully align timing marks or the engine will not run and may become damaged. This is not a do it yourself project for someone with no experience. At the very least, get a repair manual for the car and read the section on timing belt replacement to decide if it's something you can tackle. If not, take it to a shop and have them do the work. The timing belt is supposed to be replaced at specific mileage intervals, to prevent failure. How to adjust timing belt on a 1989 Suzuki Swift GTI DOHC?you can but a haynes manual that walks you through it step by step at most parts stores, but i'm concerned you may have bent some valves on that puppy. How to adjust timing belt on a 1989 Suzuki Swift GTI DOHC?Wow.

You're going to have a big job ahead of you.

Since it is a DOHC, you're going to have to loosen all the valve adjusters to get the timing marks to #1 cylinder TDC. Otherwise, the valves will hit the piston.

Then you align the timing marks, install the timing belt and readjust the valves.

Too bad it isn't an eight valve engine. You wouldn't have to do that.

How many times do I have to replace my timing belt for my car?

I have a 99 honda Civic. I first replace a timing belt when it was like 70,000 miles. right now, it is at 135,000 miles... Do I have to replace one?? how many times do i need to get it for my car?How many times do I have to replace my timing belt for my car?Typical timing belt replacement intervals are Every 60,000 miles on fuel injected vehicles of today.

Do not Ever skip this......If the belt breaks .......most often the motor eats itself internally.......and a rebuilt or replacement engine will be required. How many times do I have to replace my timing belt for my car?survey says 105K miles is the recommended replacement interval for your civicHow many times do I have to replace my timing belt for my car?Get a manual and read recommended intervals! It is very bothersome to break it when on road somewhere, - and some engines do not have clearances for pistons to keep them from hitting valves when camshaft not turning, -- these end up in needing engine replacements or rebuilds! That is one path you want to avoid going down! How many times do I have to replace my timing belt for my car?Which engine? The 1.5 and the 1.8 have replacement intervals of 60K mi. the 1.6 and 2.0 engines have 90K mi. intervals.

All Hondas have interference engines. The biggest difference between a Honda and a Toyota is if you break a timing belt on a Toyota, you replace the timing belt. If you break one on a Honda you replace the engine.

Check which engine and do the math.Good luck.

And Joe's right. Water pump replacement every timing belt or two is good prophelactic maintenance. How many times do I have to replace my timing belt for my car?which engine ? the intervals begin at 60,000 . Also on a civic you should check on the price of replacing the water pump . It is behind the belt and usually doesn't cost much more . If you don't do it same time and a little later goes bad , you will have to pay price for removing belt anyway , so why not save some money ?

Cost to replace timing belt on 1992 acura legend?

I have a used 1992 Acura Legend with about 168,000 miles. I am not sure when the timing belt was last changed. Do I need to replace it now or is there some way of knowing when it should be replaced? Approx. how much does it cost to replace? Thank you.Cost to replace timing belt on 1992 acura legend?Your best bet is to shop around in your area. It's going to cost you a few hundred dollars.

Even if the timing belt was changed at 100,000 miles, it could use another change.

How can I check the condition of a timing belt?

Have recently bought Peugeot 307 (70,000 miles) and dealer said he wasn't sure if when the car had it's last service - a new belt was fitted.

He thinks it likely. I've contacted the garage who did the last service - but they've gone out of business. I gather that there is no way I can check the condition of the belt. I'm just releuctant to pay to have a new one fitted when it turns out that the other one is fine. Any advice welcome please. How can I check the condition of a timing belt?I agree with you entirely. Why change a perfectly good belt that,s only a few months old.You will have lots of answers telling you to change it because you will have serious damage to your engine. Many belts broke because they were contaminated with oil or were adjusted to tight causing bearing failure.Inspect the belt for any signs of cracking, for any contamination with oil or grease. If the top of the belt looks shiny and stretched change it.If it looks like new don't change it--edit--i serviced and maintained 1000,s of cars in my 3 garages and never had a belt break. Those that i changed were oil contaminated ,stretched from incorrect adjustment or obviously worn.I am not afraid to say a cambelt is OK.Many garages change them as a money making issue and any car manufacturer that cant make a belt last 60,000 miles shouldnt be in business. In the early days of cam belts the materials used were not of todays high quality and some broke, particulaly on Fords but those days are gone.People dont put new engines in a car incase the old one packs in ,so why do that with a cam belt.If it looks ok it is ok,but you must know what you are doingHow can I check the condition of a timing belt? You could have a mechanic that you TRUST remove the timing cover and give the belt a physical inspection. But then if you are going to have him go that far you may as well have him replace the belt. If it is an interference engine, you run the risk of causing expensive damage to the engine if the belt breaks. How can I check the condition of a timing belt? There is no way to tell, with a used vehicle at 70K miles I would assume the service was not done. People don't tend to do expensive service work if they will get rid of the car. With a timing belt you do the water pump as well. How can I check the condition of a timing belt?Anytime you are unsure it is always best to replace it. 70-80k is the suggested change for a timing belt. If it hasn't been changed you run the risk at causing severe damage should it actually break. How can I check the condition of a timing belt?No point in risking wrecking the engine- get the timing belt replaced. The fact that the garage which did the last sevice has gone out of business means it is not possible to check, why take the risk. How can I check the condition of a timing belt?If the engine is generally very dirty but the area around the timing cover is cleaner, that may be an indication of recent work. Hope this helps. How can I check the condition of a timing belt?as far as l know they say you should check timing belts or replace at roundabout 80'000 klmsHow can I check the condition of a timing belt?get the belt changed it is far cheaper than a new engine and will give you peace of mind

Can you advise me about my timing belt?

How can I find out (without paying an expensive mechanic) if the second-hand car I just bought has had its timing belt changed? I believe they need to be changed at 50,000 miles.

Am i doing damage to the car?

The car has 56,000 miles on the clock. Can you advise me about my timing belt?First check your owners manual and see when it needs changing,

50.000 seems like you'll be changing it all the time, my honda is every 75.000, and it wont do any damage until it brakes, then you bend valves, if the car only has 56.000 I'd bet it hasn't been changed,

with my honda they have a timing belt kit, comes with the belt and a new water pump and all the gaskets, be sure to check that out for your car,Can you advise me about my timing belt?Might help if you tell us what make and model of car you have...it varies ...

  • Need to know pricing for replacing a timing belt on a 1967 Olds 98?

The car is already in the shop getting the oil pan and trans gaskets replaced along with brakes and front suspension, so many parts are already off the car and the timing chain is already in reach. How much in fairness extra should the timing chain and timing chain cover cost to replace, looking on e-bay the costs on the parts are approx $100.00. I just don't want to be taken advantage of on the labor especially when he is already working in that area and charging me labor.Need to know pricing for replacing a timing belt on a 1967 Olds 98?Timing sprocket and chain are usually under $100 and the cover is another $55. This is parts only. If they already have it ripped apart, it should take about one hour labor.Need to know pricing for replacing a timing belt on a 1967 Olds 98?That should be a 425. I have not worked on one that old and dont know how they differ from the later motors. If there are a lot of miles on the engine you might as well replace it. Make sure you get a quality set from someone like cloyes. DO NOT get a typical parts store replacement. If the motor is fairly low miles the only concern would be if it was a plastic covered cam gear. I know a few years after that they went to that design. If it has that design I would replace it no matter what. I dont know any reason to replace the timing cover or water pump. Timing cover issues were more in the buicks that also housed the oil pump. If the water pump is working and not leaking I would not mess with it. Its not like FWD cars where its hard to get to.Need to know pricing for replacing a timing belt on a 1967 Olds 98?call three shops ask them how much to replace timing chain or belt and that should do dont matter what parts he has to or not remove its knowing how to install it and doing it right he don thave to do th ejob but then you can come back and be charged later and if it breaks can pay more for repairs then plus the tow truck chargeNeed to know pricing for replacing a timing belt on a 1967 Olds 98?I would say about $800 parts included. I would not take the parts to them as then you have no warranty in case of problems. Were the parts you supplied bad or was their labor bad? Can't prove either one.Need to know pricing for replacing a timing belt on a 1967 Olds 98?Count on $400 to $500. They should replace the water pump while doing that job which would be included in that amount.Need to know pricing for replacing a timing belt on a 1967 Olds 98?Fair chargeis another 1.5 hours.

How much does it cost to have a new timing belt put in my 2003 hyundai tiburon?Yes, you need to change the belt at 60,000 miles, the belt is only like $30, but it takes about 3-4 hours of labor, so add about $300-350 in labor to that. Unless you have platinum plugs, then you are due for replacement now and that service is about $120, to inspect your hoses, brakes etc should be free or $50 tops. You should have your transmission and coolant flushed at 60,000 miles too, about another $200-250 for both, cheaper then a $2300 transmission replacement and $500 for a new radiator though. How much does it cost to have a new timing belt put in my 2003 hyundai tiburon?a new timing belt can be anywhere from $200-300+ depending on wether you have a SE or a GT and the labor should'nt be too much extra.

60,000-75,000 miles you should get everything checked out. im not sure how much it would cost. it varries greatly from place to place, especially if you compare dealer pricing to your average joe auto mechanic.

    hope this helps.

How do I and what is the best way to change a timing belt in a 94 Ford Escort LX 1.9L.?

I was driving it when it broke. Not sure if I did any other damage internally to the motor but what is the best way to find out after I replace the belt? How do I and what is the best way to change a timing belt in a 94 Ford Escort LX 1.9L.?You can breathe a sigh of relief because your particular car's engine is NOT an interference engine, meaning the valves will NOT touch the pistons if it goes out of time. Anybody who posts, telling you otherwise, is full of S***. Even more good news is that it is also VERY easy to replace on your particular car if you are somewhat skilled. Any place you take it to, should not charge you any more than 3 hours of labour to do the repair. Any more than that, they are ripping you off. The belt itself, is also very inexpensive, even from the Ford dealer. Are you going to attempt to replace it yourself? If so, the sizes for the fasteners are 17mm for the engine mount fasteners, mostly 10mm for the splash guards underneath, as well as the fasteners that secure the hoses up top in the engine compartment,13mm for the belt tensioner bolt, 19mm for the crank pulley, and I think two 11 or 10mm nuts that hold the timing cover. Hope this helps. How do I and what is the best way to change a timing belt in a 94 Ford Escort LX 1.9L.?If it broke while driving, there will be residue under the crank sprocket. You will need to take the pass. side front tire off. Take the serpantine belt pulley off of the crank and then take the cover off to get all of the trash out of the sprocket. Then put it on TDC, then put your cam in time. Then you can put the belt on. Loosen the pulley on the water pump all of the way. When you put the belt on, tighten up the idler on the water pump, but not too tight. It will shorten the life of the belt if it's too tight. If it's too tight the motor will make a whirrr but it won't be damaging. You can get more performance if you advance your cam 1 tooth. Good luck.

also, i hope you will change the water pump, all external drive belts, cam shaft seal, crank shaft seal, re-fill new coolant, and a new valve cover gasket.

That is a timing belt JOB. not just replacing the belt. That does you no good when the cam shaft seal goes bad and starts leaking on the exhaust and giving you alot of smoke or if the water pump goes bad, then you have to take ALL THAT TIME TO GO BACK AND DO IT AGAIN, when you could have done it all at once because everything is right next to each other. that is several hundred dollars at the mechanic all over again.

How much does it cost to change timing belt?

I have a 1995 Toyota Corolla that's close to 118,000 miles. I just need an idea on how much would it cost to do it including and excluding water pump. I changed the timing belt once when it was 58,000.How much does it cost to change timing belt?I'm not an expert on this car but you generally need to replace timing belts every 60,000 miles, so you are just coming due. It will usually cost more at a dealer for a timing belt replacement than at a neighborhood mechanic, assuming you have a neighborhood mechanic that you trust for such work. I would expect a dealer to charge $500-750 for a timing belt replacement and a local mechanic to charge $350-500.

It is very likely that the mechanic (either at the dealer or an independent) will recommend replacing other parts, including belts, rollers, gaskets and the water pump. It's usually fairly difficult to get the timing belt off so it makes sense to replace other things that are in the vicinity of the timing belt. Therefore, don't be surprised if there is a list of other items that the mechanic recommends for replacement.

When I replace a timing belt, I almost always replace the water pump and I check carefully if any rollers or tensioning components look questionable. It's far easier to replace these things now and save the possibility of an inconvenient failure. But I hear you if you can't afford to tack on $200 of miscellaneous parts. How much does it cost to change timing belt?go to your local mechanicHow much does it cost to change timing belt?cheap I hear, not sure about the exact amountHow much does it cost to change timing belt?Cost varies, depending on accessories your car has, specifically: A/C, 2WD or 4WD. I can assume your car is 2WD with a/c.

The timing belt itself (the part only, cost %26lt;$50.00), but the installation requires removal of entire front of the engine. So the big cost is labor, probably $200 to $300. Since the water pump and timing belt are next to each other make sure to have the water pump replaced at the same time. You wouldn't want to go back 6 months from now and pay $50 for water pump and another $200 to $300 in labor. How much does it cost to change timing belt?when you do the timing belt its every 90K miles.

you got awhile to go before you need it done again

but most wont do the timing belt without doing water pump/accessory belts.

my guess on price would be about 200-300 bucks

Do you have to remove the engine to change a timing belt on a 2000 toyota tacoma?

I was told that Tocoma timing belts had to be changed around 90k before they broke, damaging the engine. Is this even true? And how much trouble is it to do it yourself given mechanic experience?Do you have to remove the engine to change a timing belt on a 2000 toyota tacoma?DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF. Seriously, I think your Tocoma should have the 3.4 liter V6, which I have in my 2002 4Runner. Its a big production to do it. I had it done at the dealer. Good plan, right? Guess what - After driving about 150 miles, it fell off! They didn't tighten the crank shaft properly (those were the words of the mechanic I took it too near where it died, as well as the dealer, after they checked it out). Well, too bad for the dealer, they had to come pick it up (140 miles door to door each way for them) and then they did have to yank the engine out to fix the mess.

Its an expensive service at the dealer (about $500, if I remember correctly), but you can probably get your local mechanic to do it for less.Do you have to remove the engine to change a timing belt on a 2000 toyota tacoma?I have changed the timing belt on a 91 Toyota Camry, we didn't have to remove the engine but it was a big mess. You can order or buy the book at parts stores such as O'Reiley's or AutoZone, the book will tell you.

If you have the maintenence book, it's step by step. I had never changed one before, but I did it with the book, and a little help from family members. I think it is true about damaging the engine. IF you can't afford the labor for the fix (which IS expensive), buy the book for $15 and do it yourself :)

How much to get new timing belt?

I have a 2001 Audi A4 and my mechanic said my timing belt is worn and i need to replace it. My question is what is the average price to replace a timing belt? my mechanic said he'll do it for $1600 but that sounds like way too much. p.s. if i do replace the timing belt how many more miles should my car last?(it has 102K right now)How much to get new timing belt?find another mechanic timing belts are not hard to do and all i can say is the belt will last as long as this one did I don't know about the rest of your car but if you take care of it they will last a while I had a Buick with 428 thousand miles on it and it still drove when i sold it and that wasn't a typo How much to get new timing belt? That probably is the right price. It is not the belt that cost it is the labor to install it. The belt on that car is probably around $250+ since it is a fancy car and then the rest would be the labor to get the old belt off and the new one on. Just ask your mechanic what is involved in changing it, he might have to pull the engine out or something. I know that my parents had a Nissan that you had to remove all the front body panels and the radiator and support to change the timing belt and it was like 10 hours labor. How much to get new timing belt?1600 does sound like a lot.

It isn't the part that is expensive, it is the labor involved.

I would check around for part prices and then call a few shops. You definitely need to have it replaced if you have never done it, if it breaks you end up needing a whole new engine. Then 1600 won't sound so bad.

I just had mine replaced in a 2001 Honda at a very reputable shop for 695 - but the dealership wanted 1150.

It is hard to say how much longer your car will last - it depends on how well you have maintained it up to this point. If you change the oil regularly, and don't drive hard it should go for at least 100,000 moreHow much to get new timing belt? The four cylinder calls for 4.7 hours of work and if you have the six cylinder it calls for 5.2 hours of work. So, if the hourly shop rate is $70.00. The 4 cylinder labor would be $329.00 You need to add parts also, the belt and tensioner would cost around $150.00. Around $479.00 total for the in-line four cylinder. Hope this helps. How much to get new timing belt?Assuming the car has the 1.8T engine, you are living on borrowed time, they should be done at 60K miles. If the belt breaks this is an interference engine, you will bend your valves all five in each cylinder. Its a very expensive repair. You must do the water pump at the same time, the plastic impeller pumps are meant to be replaced with the belt. The whole job should be under $1000, depending where you go.

The timing belt has nothing to do with that %26quot;clicking%26quot;. That noise is called tappet noise. This will be particularly prominent when the engine is running warm and idling.

    Solution: Get your tappets adjusted.

HTHHow do i locate the timing belt on my 1999 honda accord sedan?there is no way to tell if it has been replaced, since the owner was driving it after they installed it. the only was you know for sure is to have been there or check with the person who put it in.are you sure the clicking is coming from your fuel rail. you need to find out what part of the engine the noise is coming from, it might not even be coming from the timing belt. is the clicking at the top, the bottom, back,? the main thing is you need to isolate the noise, then go from there.

This is a form of preventive maintenance.

    To prevent failure.

    Belts stretch.

As well as drive a plastic water pump usually.

Most imports you have to change the timing belt and water pump at the same time.

Now if the timing belt fails you will have pistons hit vavles.

Does a Hyundai Elantra 2000 timing belt really need to be changed at 60,000 miles?

I have a Hyundai Elantra 2000 with 59K miles on it. It is running fine but the owners manual says that I should change the timing belt. Hyundai wants $650 for the timing belt so I went to a local Goodyear. Does a Hyundai Elantra 2000 timing belt really need to be changed at 60,000 miles? It SHOULD be changed if the manufacturer specifies. However,

if you go another 5 thousand miles, it wont break, so shop around. MY favorite mechanic quoted me a price of $275.

My dealer wanted $700. for the same work. I think you are being overcharged.

IT IF YOU DO WAIT THE REPAIR BILL WILL BE IN THE 3-4 THOUSAND DOLLAR RANGE. THE REASON THEY RECOMMEND THAT IT BE CHANGED AT THAT TIME IS WHEN THE TIMING BELT BREAKS IT WILL CAUSE THE VALVES TO SLAM INTO THE TOPS OF THE PISTONS AND BEND ALL THE INTAKE AND EXAUST VALVES AND POSSIBLY CRACK THE PISTONS SO YOU CAN PAY THEM NOW OR REALLY PAY THEM LATER.Does a Hyundai Elantra 2000 timing belt really need to be changed at 60,000 miles? You should do what the owners manual says. If the belt breaks, all of you valves in the engine will bend and you'll need a new engine. That will be a lot more expensive. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.Does a Hyundai Elantra 2000 timing belt really need to be changed at 60,000 miles? In my computer it says to replace the belt at 60K also. These are Korean Cars. Their quality isn't as good as the Japanese cars. That is why you need to replace them sooner than most. This is not a interference engine so if it does break it will not harm your engine like some cars.

A realistic price that I charge for my shop is 180 in labor 50 for the belt. It would cost you 230 bucks if I did it minimum. To do all belts, waterpump it will be 210 in labor, and 65 for the pump and 80 for belts. Your total would be 355 plus coolant and taxes.

you can have it done and do the water pump with it.

Parts typically replaced are timing belt, and water pump. I usually change the belt tensioner for every other timing belt replacement job. If you mail order, the part should run under $100. Esp. Timing belt, low end I found for my civic was $40, and high end was $120 for Honda OE belt. Most mail order place had it for $80 - $90 range.

Doing this yourself isn't too difficult. The hardest thing is removing the crankshaft pulley nut. It is torqued at 140 ft/lbs and is pain to remove without some holding tool.

If you have not change the timing belt before, then you might want someone to show you how to take it out and put it in. What I usually do is set the engine to TDC, and run a paint marker between the belt, and cam pulley. Then take the belt out, transfer the markings to the new belt, and install and verify the alignment after. After the belt installation, take out the spark plugs, put socket over the crank bolt, and spin it to check for valve/piston contact. If you remember to check, there is no way you can damage the engine. How to reset the timing belt on 99 beetle 2.0 engine?

I recently changed the water pump and timng belt. I did the mark and match method. The car started but it seems to be off timing. How can i adjust the timing or reset this??

Thanks In Advance. How to reset the timing belt on 99 beetle 2.0 engine?Wow your lucky. Thats a very easy engine to bend valves on. The only way to make sure you got it right is to take everything apart and line it up. They have a tool to lock the crank and cam so they do not move while you install everything with out that your just guessing again. How to reset the timing belt on 99 beetle 2.0 engine? The timing belt is around 4.5 to 5. to replace if done at the dealer. The engine at idle is not a interference, but around 2400 rpms it will bend valves. It is not difficult to change, but you will need an engine stand, as you need to remove the right engine mount. If it is something you would like to do, I can post the info from the manual, but I can not acess it tonight as they system is down for maint.

How do I set the timing on a timing belt and is it different for all cars? I have an 87 AMC Eagle 6 Cyl.Engine?

I just want to set the timing. I did everything else they would normaly do for a Tune-up I just want to do this myself to save money. How do I set the timing on a timing belt and is it different for all cars? I have an 87 AMC Eagle 6 Cyl.Engine? You don't have a timing belt you have a timing chain and gears on that vehicle but here is how to check and or adjust it.

    Locate the timing marks.

Clean off the timing marks so you can see them.

Mark the timing marks with a piece of chalk or white paint. Mark the one on the engine that will indicate correct timing when it is aligned with the mark on the pulley or flywheel.

Attach a tachometer to the engine.

Attach a timing light according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the timing light has three wires, one is attached to the no. 1 spark plug lead with an adapter. The other two are connected to the battery. The red one goes to the positive side of the battery and the black one to the negative terminal.

Disconnect the vacuum line to the distributor at the distributor. Plug the end of the hose.

Check to make sure that all of the wires clear the fan and then start the engine.

If there is an idle speed solenoid, disconnect it.

Aim the timing light at the timing marks. If the marks that you put on the pulley and the engine are aligned, the timing is correct. Turn off the engine and remove the tachometer and the timing light. If the marks are not in alignment, proceed to the following steps.

    Turn off the engine.

Loosen the distributor lockbolt just enough so that the distributor can be turned with a little effort.

Start the engine. Keep the cords of the timing light clear of the fan.

With the timing light aimed at the pulley and the marks on the engine, turn the distributor in the direction of rotor rotation to retard the spark, and in the opposite direction of rotor rotation to advance the spark. Line up the marks on the pulley and the engine.

When the marks are aligned, tighten the distributor lockbolt and recheck the timing with the timing light to make sure that the distributor did not move when you tightened the distributor lockbolt.

Turn off the engine and remove the timing light.

How do I set the timing on a timing belt and is it different for all cars? I have an 87 AMC Eagle 6 Cyl.Engine?HI

    I agree with UCANTCME

    good luck

timHow do I set the timing on a timing belt and is it different for all cars? I have an 87 AMC Eagle 6 Cyl.Engine?A timing belt doesn't need adjusting except when you replace it, and your car, with a 6 cylinder engine, probably has a timing chain. To set the timing in a tune-up, you loosen the distributor and adjust it using a timing light. With newer cars even that might not be necessary. Get a Chiltons or Haynes repair manual for your car at an auto parts store or bookstore.

How to adjust the timing belt?

I was reading on a website that the sprocket things the belt goes on has marks to line it, as well as the engine to line it up correctly. IS THIS TRUE? Also just wondering any mechanics out there that have replaced a timing belt/chain. HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT? The car runs, but won't idle on its own. Thanks in advancedHow to adjust the timing belt?Yes it's true. I have replace many timing belts/chains. Given your understanding of vehicles I would not recommend you doing it yourself. Not trying to be mean but you would most definitely disable your car and a mechanic would charge you more to fix it.

If the car runs what else is it doing other than not idling? How to adjust the timing belt?um unless timing belt is stretch or has skipped a tooth then that is NOT ur problem..........as for changing belt and how hard it is u STILL HAVE NOT POSTED .....YEAR/MAKE/MODEL....and without it we still CANNOT help u......

and yes the timing marks have to line up.......

buy a haynes manual on ur car will give u step-by-step on how to do it....and will tell u if u need special tools or to do special things.....like u can fu@k up ur trans on Chrysler's if u don't realign the mounts after ur done...How to adjust the timing belt?I don't know about the cars of today, but older cars had a mark on the top and bottom sprockets and a mark on the engine and when putting the belt (chain) on, the sprockets had to line up with the mark. This was so that the crankshaft sprocket was lined up with the camshaft sprocket when you put the belt or chain on. (One is above the other).

If your car was out of time, such as slipped timing chain, it probably wouldn't run. Or not run well at all, sometimes backfiring and missing.

Your problem could be in the idle system or the throttle valve needs adjusting.

Besides, in order to adjust the timeing belt, you would need to take the car apart, meaning radiator, fan, water pump, air condition, alternator, and so on, and possibly the grill in order to get to it. Not an easy job for an experienced mechanic.

I would check out your fuel system, and see if it needs attention. If you think your car could be a little out of time, like maybe the distributor needs to be moved a bit, a mechanic can do that easily, using a timeing light and setting the timing according to the books. But that is different then adjusting the timeing BELT. All a mechanic has to do is line up a line on the crankshaft pulley, on the outside of the engine, and line it up with a timing mark on the engine, using a timing light.

ADDED: I didn't see until later that it was a 79 Camero, and I think they had carburetors, not fuel injection. But the carb could be in need of a tune up, and adjusting of the air/fuel mixture.

And again, if the distributor is out of time a bit, that can be easily fixed, with a timing light. You might check your spark lugs and wires also.

When people buy a car do they think about how it has a timing belt and thats an extra $1000 down the road?

When most people shop for a new economy car, do they think about the fact that some have dohc and a timing belt and thats an extra possibly $1000 dollars down the road when the TB interval comes? It seems weird to me that auto manufacturers would design cars that are going to eventually require that kind of expensive maintenance. When people buy a car do they think about how it has a timing belt and thats an extra $1000 down the road?do people like to ask the same question twice? When people buy a car do they think about how it has a timing belt and thats an extra $1000 down the road?well it makes the manufacturers money, doesn't it. In the end, their only looking out for themselves. When people buy a car do they think about how it has a timing belt and thats an extra $1000 down the road?Sounds to me like life experience. Next time you'll know what to ask and look for. It happens to the best of us!When people buy a car do they think about how it has a timing belt and thats an extra $1000 down the road?In EVERY car built there are expensive repairs and maintenance down the road. Do you think a car can be built that will NEVER need repairs???

Be serious, pal. When people buy a car do they think about how it has a timing belt and thats an extra $1000 down the road?Yes they take it into account if they're smart. Auto manufactures design cars this way for several reasons. While, timing belts require periodic replacement they offer several advantages over chain or gear based systems. The first and biggest reason why Timing belts are used is that they are lighter than chains and gears. Less rotating mass inside the engine allows greater performance and fuel economy. Also, timing belts are quieter than chains and gears. Finally, timing belts are cheaper to manufacture so presumably you pay less for a car with a timing belt. In the long run, I think both systems probably come out about even in price with timing belt driven cars becoming the better choice every time the price of gas increases. When people buy a car do they think about how it has a timing belt and thats an extra $1000 down the road?I don't buy cars with timing belts.

They're just a problem waiting to happen.

  • How much to replace a timing belt on a 99-Lexus RX300?

I was told it was cracked. I understand that I should go ahead and change out the water pump while doing so. About how much will it cost me about for just the timing belt/ and then with the water pump? (toyota parts only)How much to replace a timing belt on a 99-Lexus RX300?if you don't replace it your going to damage engine and valves that will be costly. i purchased water pump and timing belt at toyota. timing belt was 55 dollars and water pump was 130 for my lexus es. my brother in law replaced them. if you had this done at toyota or local shop with toyota parts the labor and parts will run you between 500-650. i wouldn't go to a lexus dealer their price is always 100-200 dollars more. How much to replace a timing belt on a 99-Lexus RX300?When you say Toyota parts only, you mean you are going to a Toyota/Lexus dealership to get it done, or you're going to get your own parts and then go to a local shop?

Anyway, if you're doing at dealership, the cost at Toyota (if they'll do it) would be cheaper than Lexus. I'd say $100 cheaper. Lexus I know the belt and pump are about $750, part and labor because I had it done.

At a local shop, I would say with none Lexus parts, it should cost $400 all said and done.

How do you change a timing belt on a 1997 b2300 Mazda Pick-up truck?

I just bought a 1997 Mazda. I am trying to get the time belt changed because the old one has a few cracks in it. I want to take care of it before it goes out. Please show me a step-by-step instruction on how to change this belt. I already bought the belt for it. I have a 97 Honda Accord. How much it would cost to get a timing belt put in my car?I just had mine done for 375 dollars. Although I didn't already buy the belt, they charged me 24 dollars for the timing belt and I had to also replace the other two belts that were going bad. $15 for one and $13 for the other. How much it would cost to get a timing belt put in my car?You need to replace the water pump when you do the timing belt. And you should probably flush the antifreeze since it will be out anyway. My 99 took me most of a Saturday to do it, so the labor will be kinda high, I assume. I'm guessing the book will call for 4-6 hours. If you are around here, I'll do it. Give me a shout. How much it would cost to get a timing belt put in my car?I had my Civic done for about $450 (NYC price).

But you wasted your money on buying the belt first. Many mechanic will not guarantee their work with somebody else's parts. If the belt were to break, then they would say it was YOUR bad belt.

Return the belt. And then go to a mechanic and let him replace everything and take responsibility for everything.

  • How bad is it to change the timing belt on a 1999 hyundai accent?

1999 hyundai accent. 1.5 L. I realize its a big job no matter what. Im wondering how bad? Like do you deep to pull the motor? Or perhaps the front clip? Or maybe the passenger side fender. Im sure i can do the belt job. Just dont want to do more work than needed, like I dont want to fight with it all day just to find out I needed to pull the motor in the beginning. Thanks in advanceHow bad is it to change the timing belt on a 1999 hyundai accent? You don't really have to pull the engine out. It is a SOHC engine and it doesn't look that bad. It is a perfect engine to start with as a beginner. I started like everybody from scratch and now I know more than back then. I would advise you to either buy a technical manual for this car or get someone to supervise you (just in case) otherwise, should something come up you might be in for the whole day if not longer. The timing belt is located on the pass side towards the right front wheel. You have a lot of component to remove before you get to it including the engine mount. To remove the mount you have to somehow suspend the engine or support it on a jack (do not put the jack on the oil pan, find a solid point to support the power train). Also, it is important to mark the belt and line - up the top with the bottom of the engine. You have to find the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys. Lining-up the engine has to start from TDC point.

Overhaul, not an easy job but at the same token its something that could be accomplished (with a little supervision).

Good luck and have fun.How bad is it to change the timing belt on a 1999 hyundai accent?Replacing the belt is no more difficult then on most cars. Now, getting at the thing, that's the fun part. All the belts and brackets have to come off the front of the engine and the balancer has to be removed. Then you have to support the front of the engine (passenger side) and remove the motor mount. Get a Haynes manual. It will give you some idea of what your up against. I would also recommend you replace the water pump and the idler pulleys while your in there. Once you start to dig in you will understand why I say that. You don't want to have to do that job in between belt replacements.

Good LuckHow bad is it to change the timing belt on a 1999 hyundai accent?timing belt is no easy matter, its a 3 hour job atleast for a well tuned mechanic. get a mechanic to do it for you. one **** up and your done. i know i did this to my eclipse.

  • Can anyone help with my timing belt issue?

Hi. Can anyone advise me as to how i'd know if my timing belt was about to give up?

Im driving an 03 Renault megane with around 30k on the clock. Im aware that the mileage is nowhere near the recommendation from Renault but the age of the car should technically mean the belt needs replacing.

Can anyone advise me as to whether I should get the belt changed and are there any signs I should look for that would indicate the timing belt needs replacing?

Thanks. Can anyone help with my timing belt issue?Hi your Megan is an inter engine which means that if the belt breaks you have big problems .

Renault recommend every 70,000 or 4 years which ever is soonest .

Get the belt changed and cough up few pounds now or leave it and pay hundreds later ! simples ! yesCan anyone help with my timing belt issue?well.. spend a couple of hundred to change the belt or a couple of thousand to replace the engine...kind of makes the decsion easy..Can anyone help with my timing belt issue? If your car handbook says to get it changed, ot if the car is old, then get it changed anyway. It will be lot more expensive if it breaks. It is not worth risking it.Can anyone help with my timing belt issue?Change it at the recommended interval and switch to decaf so you don't get worked up about such things. Can anyone help with my timing belt issue? The belt should still be OK. They are usually changed based on mileage. Actually, how many times the engine has turned. If the car was sitting idle in a constant source of heat for a few years, that is different. If you are worried about it, have your belt inspected by a Renault tech. They should know! If oil has been leaking on the belt for a long period of time, you can expect a lesser belt life. What does your manual say about belt change intervals???? Keep your engine factory clean, always. Use a power washer to preserve belt life and make leaks more apparent. A clean engine is a happy engine!!!!Can anyone help with my timing belt issue?I usually change my belts when it looks worn if i don't know the history of the car, quite a simple job on a renault tho and for the sake of a couple of pounds and a couple of hours on a sunday morning it makes Sense to me, an engine replacement is a big job before a sunday roast. Can anyone help with my timing belt issue?I don't know if you can tell if the timing is about to go...See if you can find out if yours is an %26quot;Interference%26quot; or %26quot;Non Interference%26quot; engine. If it's NON interference, when the belt breaks, it won't damage your engine. I had one break on the freeway and it simply died and wouldn't start. That's how I knew I needed one! Hopefully someone will have the answer for determining when it's about to go...Can anyone help with my timing belt issue?Chances are that visually your belt will look pretty much as new but that does not mean that it not stretched or weakened. Lifespan on belts is always given as mileage or age. One of my sons is a mechanic at a Renault authorised repair garage and says if the belt is 6 years old, replace it! As another answers member correctly says, the cost to have a new belt fitted is a fraction of the cost of replacing a wrecked engine if the belt gives way.Can anyone help with my timing belt issue?usually timing belts are good for 50,000 miles.....

Cross reference a book on your car though to be sure.

Snapping a rubber timing belt can be instantly fatal to your engine.

How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 dodge stratus?

i have a 2001 dodge stratus and the timing belt broke, #1 how difficult is it to change? #2 should the water pump also be replaced too?How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 dodge stratus?you need to replace the timing belt with the tension-er ,they make timing kit that you buy that comes with everything needed to do this with, and you need a good repair manual, because it will explain this job real good and will also give you illustrated pictures of how its done, and its not easy to do on that car,if it has the 2.4 in it you in for big job,i did one a while back and it takes all day as fast as you can work to get this one done and back together and running again, and there a real pain to get back in time also, there's to many marks to line up that you could easily get of without pics of how its done, get a good haynes repair manual they offer the best pics and advice on how to do this one,and you need to replace the water pump as well while you got it off, good luck. How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 dodge stratus? On some, most, you have to remove the engine to replace the timing belt. On some cars you do not. I don't believe you have to on your Dodge.

One thing you need to keep in mind and watch for. When some cars break a timing belt, it also can cause internal damage to your car, like a broken valve.

There are 2 types of engines and they are called %26quot;Interference%26quot; and %26quot;Non-interference%26quot;. An engine designated as an %26quot;Interference%26quot; engine, there is not sufficient clearance between some engine parts, so when the timing belt brakes, you can usually expect internal problems as well.

Here is a list of engine that ARE Interference engines to see if yours is listed: 2.0 DOHC (Double Over-Head Cam), 2.4 SOHC and DHOC, 2.5 V-6, 3.0 DOHC and 3.2 DOHC. If you have one of those engines, expect internal damage.

Should your engine have to be removed to replace the timing belt, it will cost you around $1,000. Hard to quote a price from different states. If you have internal damage, it could mean a new engine.

If you have a Non-interference engine and you are able to replace it yourself, yest, replace the Water Pump. If I had the engine out, I probably would also change the oil pump. An oil pump that goes out down the highway will ruin your engine before you can get stopped.

If the engine has to be pulled and you take it to a dealer, and you have a Non-interference engine, let him know that you are aware of what you are talking about. Don't want him to feed you garbage. How do you change a timing belt on a 2001 dodge stratus? The chrysler 2.4 DOHC motor isn't an interference motor. Not sure if the SOHC 2.4, 2.7, or SOHC 3.0 used in stratus' are.

I would change the waterpump along with the timing belt tensioner.

For example, I swapped a 96 Stratus 2.4 motor into my neon. The motor had 36k and prone to failure headgasket. So I installed an updated headgasket. A year later, I had to replace the waterpump. It would have been alot easier had I done it while the motor was still on the stand.

Here is a good link on the best timing belt tensioner for the Chrysler I4 motors. http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?f=

I know money can be tight for people. This is one of those times that being cheap can cost you more in the long run.

This job is tough. You need a strong puller for the crank pulley. Probably need some heat to help. To help time the motor, make a tool to lock the cams in place. There are holes in the cam just for this.

In my neon, it would have been faster and easier to remove the motor. But I'm experienced enough to have the motor out/in of the car within a few hours.

About how many hours of labor would it take to replace a timing belt (on a 93 dodge intrepid)?

I've been told that I need a new timing belt, and that it will cost about a thousand dollars to fix it. That figure seems a bit high to me, but I don't know how many hours of labor are involved and would just like a ballpark figure as to what the reality is from an impartial source. Thanks.About how many hours of labor would it take to replace a timing belt (on a 93 dodge intrepid)?wow run away any mech wit chrysler exp will get this job done in like 4 hrs even wit taking out rad cond assembly i charge 85 a hour so it would be 340 for labor at most 140 bucks for w/p and 90 for t/b unless it needs acc belts hoses etc price shop it but don't go wit cheapest price u pay for what u get good luckAbout how many hours of labor would it take to replace a timing belt (on a 93 dodge intrepid)? If the belt broke while driving, you're going to need more than just the belt.

Those engine are what's called %26quot;interference%26quot; engines.

When the belt breaks, the piston hits the valves and does internal engine damage.

You may consider buying another car all together.

    ADDED:

    Oh, and not another DODGE.

Buy a Chevy. They last a lot longer and use timing chains, not belts.About how many hours of labor would it take to replace a timing belt (on a 93 dodge intrepid)?1000 bucks where what shop your at best you call three local shops

8 hrs maybe and price is kind of high but that depends on where your at city state shop best to shop a round might even be higher at some places but thats not outrageous for parts and laborAbout how many hours of labor would it take to replace a timing belt (on a 93 dodge intrepid)?More like $400-$500. I used my own zip code - use your own in the first source for a better estimate.

Edit - it appears the 3.3L V6 does not use a timing belt, but the 3.5L does. That engine is not listed as interference so a failed timing belt should not cause damage. Be warned Gates is not always correct about that.

What is the difference with a timing belt and timing chain?

can you adjust a timing chain on an 2000 altima. if your timing is off and you have a chain how do you fix it. if you get it fixed, is it likely to go off again.my mechanic messed with the distributor cap and said he adjusted it. does this sound right? spark plugs had some oil like substance on the white part of them.is that bad? i just bought this car two weeks ago. it ran great then now it sounds like an old piece of junk . someone please help. What is the difference with a timing belt and timing chain? The deal is, sporto, timing belts and timing chains do exactly the same thing. The difference is what they are made of. Timing chains are metal, and they look like a bicycle chain only wider and much heavier-duty. Timing belts are reinforced rubber, and look like serpentine belts, but they have %26quot;teeth%26quot;. %26quot;Cogs%26quot;, if you will. Both a chain and a belt connect the crankshaft to the camshaft(s) so that the intake and exhaust valves are always synchronized with the pistons. You cannot adjust timing belts or chains other than getting them installed exactly right in the first place. There is a tensioner that takes up any slack and keeps the belt or the chain tight so it doesn't rattle or vibrate or come off the sprockets. If the camshaft(s) and the crankshaft are not aligned properly, your engine will do one of three things: Not run at all, run very poorly, or in extreme cases damage itself when the valves hit the pistons. Over time, timing belts and timing chains stretch and wear out. In either case, they need to be replaced. Timing chains are generaly replaced as a matched set that includes the chain and the sprockets it rides on, because the teeth in the sprockets can wear out or sheer off. Both chains and belts can break. Timing chains are much less likely to break, but it does happen. Most of the time they stretch, which causes sloppy valve timing, and since the distributor is driven by the camshaft, it also causes sloppy ignition timing. I believe your Altima has a timing chain. Usually, timing chains don't just jump teeth or get out of adjustment. They simply wear out, stretch, and sometimes break. Your car is almost 7 years old. Under the hood is a dirty place. A little oil on the plugs is probably no big deal. Replace them and see what happens. Adjusting the distributor cap should have exactly no effect on the way the car runs since it's not adjustable. Replacing the distributor cap can make a world of difference, because often times, distributors get what is called carbon tracking, which causes the spark plugs to fire wrong or not at all. Here's what you should do: Fix the cheap stuff first. Get yourself a set of plugs, a set of wires, and a new distributor cap. Put them in. Get a new air filter. Put it in. If your problems don't go away, see about getting the ignition timing checked. That's one way a mechanic can find out if your timing chain is the problem. Late model cars like yours often don't have adjustable ignition timing, because it's all computer controlled. But if the timing chain is stretched beyond what the engine's computer can correct for, it needs to be replaced. That means pulling off the front cover of the motor, taking off the sprockets and the chain, as well as many other parts that are in the way, installing the new timing set, making sure it's set correctly, and putting all that stuff back together. It's not an easy job, and when my car needed it, it was almost 400 bucks. FYI, I'll bet you that your timing chain is fine unless you have a buttload of miles on your car. I've had lots of cars, but only one broke a timing set, and that was at 250,000 miles, and that's because Ford used plastic teeth on the sprockets. What is the difference with a timing belt and timing chain?Timing chains are internal to the engine, while timing belts are external.

It sounds like you need to see another mechanic. What is the difference with a timing belt and timing chain?A timing belt is like a fan belt made out of rubber. A timing chain is just that. A metal chain. Both do the same things. Both can stretch and both can break. You can adjust a timing chain/belt on any vehicle but if it is old and stretched out, it won't do much good and the timing will be off again. It's expensive to fix.

I'd get the thing running again if possible and sell it before something else goes wrong. Sorry you're having such bad luck. What is the difference with a timing belt and timing chain?Timing belts need to be replaced every 60,000-90,000 miles and Timing Chains are not replaceable there should never be anything wrong with them. They also have a lifetime warranty on it from nissan. Hope that helpsWhat is the difference with a timing belt and timing chain?Older cars have a timing chain. It was just that, a metal chain that drove the timing mechanism of the motor. Almost all cars since the late 1980's use timing belts, much like the fan belts in the motors of cars, or the serpentine belt in a newer car.

Both the belt and the chain have one thing in common; if they break, the motor will not run. If you have a timing chain, it can slip on a tooth or two of the pulley that turns it. When that happens, you will lose power and performance. A mechanic will have to go in and fix it, or more often, replace it. The same can be true of a timing belt; you probably should just have the timing belt replaced if the car has over 60,000 miles and has not had the timing belt replaced. Most car manufacturers recommend this.

BUT- Your description of the problem does not sound like a timing belt problem; it could be something in your exhaust system. Have another, more trustworthy mechanic look at your exhaust system. A leaky muffler or tailpipe can sound awful. If the car is still running great, but just sounds bad, I would look at the exhaust system first. What is the difference with a timing belt and timing chain? You've asked a lot of questions and may be confused about a couple of things. First, a timing belt is made of rubber and has rubber teeth... really! A timing chain is made of metal and looks much like a bicycle chain. An engine with a timing belt has sprockets that look a lot like gears, around which the timing belt is fitted. An engine with a timing chain has sprockets much like what you see on a bicycle.

Both a timing belt and a timing chain can be incorrectly installed, which can cause a variety of symptoms on a car. Since a timing belt has more teeth, it is easier to get it mis-installed by a tooth in either direction. In some cases, this could give the car more power under certain conditions. However, it's always best to install the belt/chain exactly as the manufacturer recommends. Timing belts/chains take power from the engine's crankshaft and deliver it to the engine's camshaft. Since the camshaft operates the engine's valves, the %26quot;timing%26quot; that the timing belt/chain does is valve timing. (In some cars, the distributor operates off of the camshaft, so the timing belt/chain can affect the distributor.)

When your mechanic adjusted your distributor, he was adjusting the ignition timing, not the valve timing. Getting the ignition timing right is a good thing, so your mechanic was probably helping things by adjusting it.

I don't know how much oil was on your spark plugs but an oil smear on the outside of a spark plug is nothing to worry about. Most engines have a bit of oil leakage here or there, and a little oil can get splattered around. If you unscrew the spark plug and there is oil on the electrode, then your engine is leaking oil internally and it is fouling the spark plugs. This is an expensive repair, usually a valve job but sometimes an engine rebuild.

From what you've explained, it's hard to say why your engine is running poorly. Please give more of its symptoms and I may be able to give better advice. What is the difference with a timing belt and timing chain? The timing belt use over chains and gears is another way for them to present more problems that the average motoring public have to put up for repair. They should be changed every 60'000 miles or less and if not there is a chance of further damage than a 30--100 dollar belt replacement, so go, go buy new car. What is the difference with a timing belt and timing chain? It sounds more like a vacuum leak than a timing issue. There are ways to check for such that are not real expensive. Spray a can of starting fluid (that is ether, careful it is flammable) into the area that the air sound is coming from while the engine is idling. If the idle smooths out while applying the starting fluid, it is a vac leak. The computer will attempt to mask a vac leak via adjusting the fuel mix up to a point. I had a VW Jetta gas engine that the rubber boot between the oil fill cap and the rocker cover was leaking vacuum, causing rough idle issues and slightly lower fuel mileage. I replaced the spark plugs, the plug wires and tried adjusting the timing. When I located the bad rubber boot and replaced it, the fuel mileage went up and the problem went away.

Some cars have non-adjustable timing, but they also tend to not have a distributor. They use a %26quot;distributorless%26quot; ignition system, coil packs that fire directly at each cylinder or multiple cylinders (as did my Chrysler Concord in 1993) that are also computer controlled.

You have adequate descriptions of timing belt vs chain. A short recap: timing chains are internal, timing belt external. Timing belts require changing more often than timing chains, neither are not cheap to replace, both serve the same function.
