How tight should the timing belt be?

I replaced the timing belt in my 92 volvo 940gl and it seems to be wanting to slip off...just wondering, how tight should it be? maybe its loose..How tight should the timing belt be?the old mechanics trick is to try to twist it, you should NOT be able to twist it at 90 degrees to its normal position

Be aware some cars will get engine damage if the belt slips off

or jumps a tooth

or snaps

suggest you sort it nowHow tight should the timing belt be?The rule of thumb is that you should not be able to twist it more than 90 degrees in the middle of the longest run. It's a notched belt and doesn't need to be bar-taut, indeed that will damage bearings in the pulleys it runs over. How tight should the timing belt be?Check the repair manual. Yet the ability to do 90 degree belt twist is often accurate. How tight should the timing belt be?the way i tighten them is if i can flex the belt half way with my fingers then it,s tight enough and i never had any trouble. i guess i,am a old timer but it works for me.
