How to set timing belt if I didn麓t set engine to TDC before removing it?

I have a 93 toyota 4runner and I was replacing the water pump. I removed the timing belt without setting the engine to top dead center. Do I need to remove the cylinder head covers and look at the valves in order to time them with the crankshaft. There are markings on the camshaft sprockets. If I aligned these and found TDC on the crankshaft would that be enough? How to set timing belt if I didn麓t set engine to TDC before removing it?%26gt; look at the timing gear of crank shaft, there is suppose a mark or slot on it, then find the timing on the timing belt housing (aluminum). align it.. it is now in top dead..usually the key pin on the crankshaft will position upward,

%26gt;open valve cover , (cover only)..see if the intake and exhaust valve of cylinder 1 in close position,

%26gt;look at the cam lobe, notice it will be in downward position, position it equally downward by turning if necessary the camshaft, verify it by again looking at the key pin, it will be usually in upward position.

and the no#4 intake valve will be in starting to open position.

%26gt;this procedure is for gas engine 4 cylinder,

%26gt;for diesel, you still have to find again the injection pump timing, it is visible around the timing gear and just align it at the cover(back of gear)

%26gt;you did not specify clearly what engine you have.

%26gt;place the tensioner in open position and temporary tighten the bolt.. for easy installation of T-belt.

%26gt;place now the timing belt to position and then loosen the tensioner bolt.

%26gt;tension of the tensioner bearing spring will be the tension of your timing belt. do not add more tension by pushing more the tensioner bearing.

%26gt;turn the crankshaft twice, timing marks must align back again after 2 crankshaft turns

%26gt;assemble remaining parts. How to set timing belt if I didn麓t set engine to TDC before removing it?with the timing belt off set your crank to top dead center and set the alinement's marks on the cam to the marks replace the belt and applier the tensioner check marks making sure that they are on once more if not adjust them and check again once you have the marks all lined up t righting all tensioner and cover bolts replace all parts car should start now check the timing with a st rob and set distributer should be on advancement markHow to set timing belt if I didn麓t set engine to TDC before removing it?i just changed a timing belt about a month ago on 1 of those. put the crank on 0 top dead center and turn the cam around to where the gage hole is at. the 1 i did had a gage hole so i stuck a drill bit in the hole so it would,nt turn when i was putting the belt on. then i removed the bit after i tightened the tensioner.
