How much slack should there be in my timing belt 98 eclipse turbo?

I just noticed that my timing belt seemed a little loose. it is supposed to be very firm? or have a little slack? How can i tighten it up, also how much should i tighten it?

Thanks! How much slack should there be in my timing belt 98 eclipse turbo?OK first off you should only have about 1/4%26quot; of %26quot;play%26quot; in the timing belt. Now if it is loose then you MUST get it replaced. Also you MUST get a new auto tensioner and have it adjusted right or it will never be right. The infamous auto tensioner on these cars are tricky for people who have never dealt with them before. The 95-99 GST and GSX eclipses are the only cars in the world where YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO tighten the tensioner WAIT AT LEAST 15 minutes and re-tighten. If this is not done the belt WILL slip and fail. You really should replace the water pump also as it is under all the belts and pulleys. It will save a major headache in the future if it decides to go out, and a new one is only around $90.How much slack should there be in my timing belt 98 eclipse turbo? If the belt is loose it needs replacing along with the balance belt, tensioner and pulleys. Do the water pump while you're at it.

I'd go to the dealer for the work. Most mechanics don't have a clue how to work on a Mits. How much slack should there be in my timing belt 98 eclipse turbo?how do you just notice a timing belt???
