How likely is your engine to be ruined if your timing belt goes out?

I asked a question a few minutes ago about my car dying and now it won't even try to start , it just clanks 1 time when I try to start it...all the lights work fine..could it be the timing belt...it is a 2002 Kia Rio?How likely is your engine to be ruined if your timing belt goes out?It's not a question of likelyhood, really. It sounds like that might be what happened to you. The clank might be one piston hitting an open valve.

Bending a valve on a stock engine, with hydraulic lifters, doesn't happen all that much any more.



Should have to replace the belt, with the cam timing %26amp; crank position set, and off you go.
