How much would it be to install a timing belt on a 95 dodge neon?

on a 95 model id say you got single over head cam so about 200 bucks to replace that one ,and that's counting labor and parts, its not a hard job but if you have never done one before its a real hard job to do and get it back in time, its better to let a shop do it than attempt to do it your self, good luck. How much would it be to install a timing belt on a 95 dodge neon?SOHC calls for 2.5 hours at the labor rate in your area.

DOHC calls for 3.5 hours at the labor rate in your area.

Price of the belt which differs for SOHC and DOHC.

Good LuckHow much would it be to install a timing belt on a 95 dodge neon?I'm not sure about the specific times but Tim is correct. The DOHC is more labour intensive so you need to know which engine you have in your Neon.

It is also a good idea to replace the timing belt tensioner and water pump at the same time. The reasoning for that is should either item go, it's a lot of work to replace them so you may as well change them while you are changing the timing belt. How much would it be to install a timing belt on a 95 dodge neon?Hi, the job pays 6 hours at whatever labor price the shop charges. It takes a while for anyone. Warranty pays 3, so you see why so many dealerships can't hire anyone, times are determined by either the manufacturer(warranty) or there are a couple of labor operations books for repair shops to use. A Neon with a standard 4 would be around 6 hours with DOHC, turbo pays an hour extra., a fair time. Most dealers only allow warranty time, ok. Tough but thats the way it is. It takes quite a few repairs to get a 40 hour work week. These times are called labor operations times. The books are available to anyone at a library or at the shop you bring the car to, its all about time. Some technicians work salary or by the hour, but it is rare in dealerships for a line mechanic to work hourly. The parts would add maybe 175.00 tops. okHow much would it be to install a timing belt on a 95 dodge neon? The chrysler warranty says you can do it in less than two hours, the mechanic at the dealer says you need four to five hours, the same for the mechanic at the corner. The dealership will charge you about $600 included the parts and labor, the mechanic at the corner shop will charge about half of that and the tree shade mechanic will do it for $200, the cheaper you go less warranty you have, I advise to replace the water pump that is behind the timing belt and replace the timing belt tensioner too, that will jack up the price but it is worth it, it is and old car and those parts may be ready to brake too. good luck

  • How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?

I don't know how many miles or the exact year. I think it's early to mid 1990's. It's my boyfriend's car and he's thinking of changing it on its own. I just want to know how long that might take. How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?I own a shop, and build many engines. A good experienced mechanic will take about six - eight hours. Some engines have belts, while others have chains, it just depends on which engine you are talking about. I know I may get some flack about how long it takes, and what the book calls for, but If a person does one, then one must consider the tool thing. How is he going to remove the damper from the crankshaft? Sometimes they will break, even using the correct gear puller on them. Some have a tensioner that must be replaced in them, so this job can turn into a nightmare for a backyard mechanic sometimes. Tell your BF to go purchase a %26quot;Haynes Repair Manual%26quot; from the parts store %26quot;before%26quot; he tries to tackle the job, or he may end up with a blown engine on his hands.

    Part 2:

Many people on here over look the fact; the answers thing is world wide, and they are assuming you are in the USA. Like I said it depends on the engine as to the chain, or belt thing. The chains use a different type of tensioner. It has what is known as a wear strip on the tensioner, and if this is worn it will have to be replaced. It's not worth getting in a fight with your BF over %26quot;its a belt, or its a chain%26quot;! If it's his car, then let him work on it, and don't worry about %26quot;how long%26quot; it will take to do the job because; once he gets started on it, he will see it's a job he doesn't need to do, and that will be the end of that. Sounds like he wants to be a mechanic, and what better way for him to get started? Giving your BF some space may do more for your relationship than he will for the car. I think once he see's what he is getting in to, he will forget about changing it. One can love a puppy, but hold it too hard, and squeeze it to death.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?as long as the mechanic feels it takes. How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass? How experienced is your boy friend with mechanics? It is a six hour job if you know what you are doing. First thing to do before he starts tearing into the car is to find true top center on the number one cylinder. That is the compression stroke of the cylinder. Once that is established you will be able to remove the radiator and the water pump and hoses. Remove the valve cover where the number 1 cylinder is and watch the valve spring open and close on the number 1 cylinder. Make certain that it is the intake valve not the exhaust valve. Remove the timing cover and look at the posistion of the dot on the large gear. That is the gear on the top. Double check that it is on the compression stroke of the number 1 cylinder.

Line up the two dots on the new timing chain in the middle facing each other on the gears. Rotate the engine by hand until the dot on the large gear is at the very top in alignment with the lower gear. That is actual top dead center on the number 1 cylinder. Double check your work. Rotate the engine once again and watch the intake valve open then close. The dot on the large gear should be in alignment in the middle with the dots facing each other. After that rotate the engine until the dot is at the exact top in alignment with the lower dot. Replace the timing cover and accessories. Good luck little Lady.................How long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?well first place its chain change only if broke or worn time well everything on front of motor has to come off 3.5 to 5.5 for someone experienced and the right toolsHow long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass? There is no timing belt on these cars, only a timing chain. Why change it?

This isn't really a job that I would tackle in my driveway. It would take 4 or 5 hours if you are familiar with changing timing chains. On this particular engine, the oil filter adapter housing/pressure regulator is bolted to the side of the front cover in front of the R/S inner tripod joint. You must remove the R/S axle to access it.

Good LuckHow long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?as long as it takes like an afternoonHow long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?this car definitely has a timing chain but they can still stretch and the plastic rollers on them can crack and break. this is not a job for even a slightly experienced gear head. let a professional do it because if you mess it up, youre out a car. but if a shop messes it up, you get compensated.... let's be smart hereHow long does it take to change a timing belt on an Oldsmobile Cutlass?if you dont know what you are doing it could take a verry long time.. if you do know what your are doing. shouldnet take more than a couple of hours.... but you got to make sure you get the timing right.. and that is verry easy to screw up.. if the timing wheel gets turned at all.. and you put the belt back on it can be in the wrong positon and the car wont start .. the valves halve to be in the right position.. and a certin valve hals te be the one that is up .. and they go around twic there is two positions where that valve will be up if i remember correctly.. been a long time sine i worked on timing...

Can anyone tell me how to change a timing belt?

My '93 chevy 1500 need a new timing kit its real loose and i got no power. How would i change it and up my power. thxCan anyone tell me how to change a timing belt?Unless you ever worked on a car before take to chevy, it should cost around 500-850 parts and labor, very hard job to explain and harder to do, even us vets hate doing them, you have to make sure you have motor timed correctly before you remove anything also, you need a few special tools, its not something you could just do at home on a first time, i would take it in. Now im not sure if that motor has a belt or chain to check simply look under hood a chain willl be sealed and oil cooled, a belt will be external and just have a plastic cover over it on outside of block you can usally peek inside and see belt, if you hear it slapping the top of timing cover then its past its time. Can anyone tell me how to change a timing belt?bring it to a ase mechanicCan anyone tell me how to change a timing belt?Yes, but you first have to have a vehicle that uses a timing belt.If you have a timing belt in that engine you have some serious issues. That engine does not use a timing belt. You obviously need to take your vehicle to someone that knows what they are doing. Can anyone tell me how to change a timing belt?Do you mean serpentine belt? You will have to loosen the alternator, remove the belt, install the new one, brace a crow bar against the alternator until the belt is tight, tighten bolts. Then check your timing and readjust if necessary.

I am trying to replace the water pump on a 1999 plymouth breeze 2.4L. The direction to loosen the belt should be CW, which keeps the bolt tight. This is how it is on our Dakota.

How hard is it to change the timing belt on a 93 Saturn?

I have pretty basic automotive skills and a few tools. Is there anything special that i should know? Do i need any special tools that the average backyard mechanic might not have? How hard is it to change the timing belt on a 93 Saturn?first purchase a shop manual for this car as there several procedures that Saturn uses that are different from most everyone else. sl/sc engines do not have timing belts they are chain driven[granted it is not much more than a bicycle chain] but if it breaks the cyl. head will have to come off for valve replacement and guide repairs both twin cam and single cam engines are interference fit [valves collide with pistons] if the timing cover is to be removed it is sealed with R.T.V.sealant and surfaces must be chemically clean upon reassembly to prevent oil leakage. there is a tool available to align the geroter type oil pump and should be obtained as this part of the job with engine in the car can be tricky. #[SA9104E] if chain is to be replaced you must also install new tensioner and guide rails as they will be worn out or broken up. NOTE rebuilt sl engines [single cam] are rather inexpensive from Saturn if your body and interior are still in good shape you may be money ahead to replace the engine especially if you know that valves are bent. this is an awkward engine to remove[sub-frame comes out with engine and trans] and should only be done on a lift. hope i helped and use caution jacking and blocking,[ you can only be dead once.] and good luck

  • How much will it cost to replace timing belt and motor mounts?

I have a 2001 Ford focus ZX3. Zetec engine with dual overhead cam. Is having all this replaced going to be expensive? Because my motor vibrates and I also have 85,000 miles on it. I don't want to pay the expensive price offered at the dealership. I want to go somewhere thats not so expensive but will do a good job. Everyone's advice is appreciatedHow much will it cost to replace timing belt and motor mounts?timing belt around $350 but Expect charges at a new-car dealership to be slightly higher. How much will it cost to replace timing belt and motor mounts?Do not I repeat DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO THE DEALER, THEY WILL TAKE YOU AND YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY. Its not going to be cheap, parts are not the problem, its the labor. Timing belt, the front of the engine has to come off, ie, fan, what ever is in the way to gain access, radiator, fan belts, timing belt cover, water pump. Just a guess, $400/to $700.00. I know im high, on the price but, expect the unexpected. If you have any experience, motor mounts are not that hard to replace. You need a jack (sturdy one, FLOOR JACK) AND MAYBE A 2X4 PIECE OF WOOD. Soak the motor mount bolts with WD40, for 24 hours, this will ease the removal. Jack up one side of the car, make sure u put the 2x4 on top of the floor jackm because you are going to raise the ENGINE, NOT THE CAR. Suggest you go to the local library, Check out a CHILTON MANUEL, that references ur YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL OF YOUR CAR. This book is worth its weight in GOLD. It details Removal and installaion of your problem. Follow it to the LETTER. Good Luck, THE INSPECTOR

This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

It should be inspected every time you change the oil. If it looks cracked it should be replaced. With 43000 miles I would replace the belt. The timing belt is another story. It should last a very long time. At least 100,000 miles. If you are not a mechanic I don't recomend doing this your self. But most manufactuers do not recomend a timing belt change untill after 100,000 miles.

Most place would highly recommend changing out water pump at same time of timing belt cuz if water pump fail later it would cost the same to do it later.Have you ever had your timing belt fixed? How much did it cost? You in America?

It varies greatly depending on the make model.

Over the years i replaced one on a Pinto, one on a Mustang. For the price of the chain and a little hard work. But the one on the 928s was gonna cost my left arm and right leg.

Labour is the killer unless you do it yourself.

It should only take a day. Make certain whoever does it has the parts on hand and dont let em bullshit you into extra ****. If you have a Honda or similar.Remember you can pick up a whole Mtr for under 600 bucks.with less than 30,000 miles on it.Have you ever had your timing belt fixed? How much did it cost?$350 to $500, with the higher figure if you go to the dealer.Have you ever had your timing belt fixed? How much did it cost?Cost me 鈧?50 to get it changed in Ireland!

How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?

how do you know its time to change a timing belt on a 2006 Suzuki forenza with 34 miles on it???? What are the signs that its time for a new timing beltHow do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?There are no warning signs. Just follow this advice from Suzuki:

The Suzuki Forenza Maintenance Schedule suggests inspecting it at 30,000 mile intervals and replacing it at 60,000 mile intervals.

This car has an interference engine. That means that if the timing belt breaks the engine will suffer severe internal damage and will likely have to be replaced. Replacing the timing belt is rather expensive, but doing so may save you an engine.....

You are not only supposed to check it at 30,000, but it may need to be adjusted. The belt can get loose after it has stretched and it needs to be tightened back up.How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?It needs to be looked at 30,000 miles and replace at 60,000 miles. Your other belt that runs the fan,AC,and other things should be replace at the same time as they have to take it off to replace the timing belt and could save your some labor costs. Cracked, chiped,or some loose treads are a good sign but not always. A good mechic can tell you if its is time and you are looking at a few hundred bucks to have it done. If you have only 34 miles on your car for a 06 then you got a good deal then. How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?There are no signs. It just goes in a second. I'm pretty sure you have an 'interference' type engine. Most people do. That means when the timing belt fails, the engine will have major damage and may need replacement.

Every car owner lives with this so don't get too excited. Look in your car manual and be sure the timing belt is replaced exactly at the mileage stated. Not sooner and not later. Also have the water pump and belts replaced at the same time. That's done because they need replacement around the same time as the timing belt and it's cheaper to get the extras done while they have things apart. How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?Check your owners manual. Sometimes a busted timing belt can damage valves. My 03 neon is 84 months or around 100,000 miles. 30,000 is not right for any car. That's way too soon. My mechanic looked up info on my car.How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?Timing belts are to be replaced every 30,000 miles to keep the valve train working right. How do you know its time to change a timing belt on a suzuki forenza 2006?it will tell you in your service guide and handbook, if not, research on google or wikpedia, engines vary and range from 30,000 to 78,000.

How much does it cost to change a timing belt in a car?

I have a ford ranger and I need to get the timing belt changed. does anyone have an idea how much it costs to get one changed. I live in the uk but the cost for anywhere is better than nothing

ThanksHow much does it cost to change a timing belt in a car?All of the belt driven accessories at the front of the engine and the timing chain cover will have to be removed. Depending on the mechanic, since this is very labour intensive, this could be several hundered dollars. Expect to pay around five hundred for parts and labour, at minimum.

If you want to save money, you could do this yourself for only the cost of the timing chain. Get a manual such as Haynes for your model and year vehicle. It's just a lot to remove.

My currency estimates are in US dollars. How much does it cost to change a timing belt in a car?Not necessarily. The prices we give you here are meaningless to you since they have no relation to how much someone will charge you when they actually do it.How much does it cost to change a timing belt in a car? That will depend on the car. In the UK, I would just guess at least 150 pounds. If it has a dual over-head cam, then it would be more. Depending on the car, it can be a very taxing job. Good luck. How much does it cost to change a timing belt in a car?why do you ask this question here?

Also, about how many miles should I get out of a clutch? How many miles does the timing belt or timing chain need to be replaced on a 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5?nissan altimas both 2.5 and 3.5 models have timing chains. they are guranteed for the life of the car by nissan, this also comes with their 105,000 mile tune up interval

depending on your mileage will also depend on how much longer the chain, the lower your miles the longer the chain will last.

as far as your clutch goes, i dont know. my guess is every 90k to 100k miles if you dont ride it hard.

my 2003 nissan altima hit 67,000 2 days ago, im guessing my timing chain has plenty of life left in it

my parents drive a 1994 mercury villager (identical to nissan quest) that has 240,000 miles and have had no major problems with anything. How many miles does the timing belt or timing chain need to be replaced on a 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5?Nissan does not warranty the timing chain for as long as you own the car. 6 years 60 thousand miles or extended warranty only. Clutches need to be replaced when slipping happens in higher gears. Clutch is a wear item not covered past 12,000 miles. Chains, tension devices and plastic chain guides wear away. Some chains make the whirring tapping noise and rattle at idle on start up that is the indication that the chains need replacing. If the motor has to be removed for chains do a clutch while the motor is out. I do not like replacing chains and guides / motor in the car.How many miles does the timing belt or timing chain need to be replaced on a 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5?I'm at 108,000 on my Maxima and I checked the maintenance manual and the replacement is listed at 105,000 miles but the note states for Frontiers, quest and something else no the Maxima. I don't plan to change it under my ownership but I'm looking to sell. If you have your manual it should be listed under the mileage/interval of trecommendedned change.

My timing belt on my ford zx2 keeps shredding. How can I stop this?

I have a 98 Ford Escort Zx2 that keeps eating timing belts soon after I put a new one on. I have replaced the tensioner and the two pulleys yet still have the same problem. I am stumped on this one and I was told I have to replace the head which I would rather not do seeing as it could be quite costly. If anyone has had this problem before or know how to fix it could you please help me?My timing belt on my ford zx2 keeps shredding. How can I stop this?Make sure that everything is at the PROPER tension, the factory service manual or aftermarket service manual will have proper instructions.

Also make sure you're using the proper motor oil in the engine.

Also make sure nothing is contacting the belt, such as shields, oil, or debris.

Shredding timing belts is a serious serious problem. The zetec 2.0 engine is a non-interference engine, but ONLY when its spun by hand. At higher RPM speeds it can actually become an interference engine because of close tolerances, and cause internal damage.

It it were me, I'd either take it to a proper mechanic for a compression check, and maybe a scope test, or I would put a new belt on it, clean it up, and sell it 'as is' while it was running!!!My timing belt on my ford zx2 keeps shredding. How can I stop this?thanks for the advice but i ended up buying another engine for it. runs great now. only 33,000 miles instead of 140,000 too

If my timing belt broke as im driving?

im guessing i wont be able to accelerate rite? what would i hear? just a loud clanking and flapping noise from the hood? also.. say the belt is already broke and i try to start it. what would i hear then? i know it'll probably break my pistons and whatnot. how often should i change my timing belt?If my timing belt broke as im driving?I had this happen to me. The timing belt broke and the engine just died. Lost my power steering and braking, which can be hard for some people.

If this happens, there is a chance for engine damage depending on the engine type, interference or non-interference. An interference engine means the maximum height of the pistons is enough to reach the lowest point of the valves. If that happens you would most likely bend your valves and damage the piston, which usually junks the car. This could also happen if you try to start the car with an interference engine after the belt brakes, so be careful.

My mechanic told me the timing belt should be changed about 75,000 miles. This question could be more accurately answered by a dealer technician. If my timing belt broke as im driving? The engine would shut down, you would likely lose power steering and brakes, you car would coast to a stop wherever you happened to be, you could spin the engine with the starter it would spin but not fire up.If my timing belt broke as im driving? If your timming belt broke, you would hear massive metal crashing cause your valves would hit the pistons. Your timming belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles to prevent this.If my timing belt broke as im driving? You'd be in worse trouble if it happens while you're driving. A lot of major damage can occur that way. I've seen it drive pistons right through the bottom of the engine.

If it's already broken, and you try to start it, nothing will happen. You'll hear the engine sound like it's trying to start, but it won't engage, and no damage will occur. It's suggested that you change it every 60,000 - 70,000 miles. I've never given it that long. I've always changed it at 50,000 miles. If my timing belt broke as im driving? The engine will stop immediately and you will not be able to accelerate. Any subsequent attempts at starting will result in further damage to the engine. A timing belt which breaks when the engine is running may damage your cylinder head, camshaft, valves, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft and even the engine block.

Timing belts should be replaced every 60,000 miles, with periodic checks in between to ensure it is in sound condition.

2-in-1 q. What's the difference in damage if one lets a timing belt live its life out until breakage?

    Car: Subaru Forester

What is better, to change the timing belt around 100,000? or how high? or to let it break on its own.

What, if any, collateral damage incurs by simply leaving it be until it breaks on its own?

    2. If the water pump isn't exchanged at this time, will it strip the belt once it also breaks down?2-in-1 q. What's the difference in damage if one lets a timing belt live its life out until breakage?you need really change the timing belt at around 60.000 miles if you let it break then it will cause all sorts of big problems like bent valves broken pistons and so on as for the water pump no it will not strip the belt2-in-1 q. What's the difference in damage if one lets a timing belt live its life out until breakage? In all seriousness, that's like asking why we shouldn't wait until the vehicle runs completely out of gas instead of when the indicator shows close to empty - or why we should replace the tires when the wear bar indicators are exposed instead of driving them for all their worth.

The answer is simple - no one wants to break down on the freeway during rush hour or walk home during a snow storm.

    Inspection

    1. To determine if timing belt length is within specifications, measure tensioner actuator from centerline of tensioner actuator to end of rubber boot. See Fig. 6. If measurement is 3.2-3.7%26quot; (80.5-94.0 mm) for a used belt, the belt is in acceptable range. Replace belt is measurement is more than 3.7%26quot; (94 mm).

    2. Inspect belt teeth and back side of belt for cracks, tears or other damage. Inspect components for excessive wear or unusual conditions. Note any evidence of oil or other fluid intrusion.

Fig. 6: Measuring Timing Belt Tensioner Actuator Length

    Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

    Installation

    1. Install camshaft sprockets with bolts and locks. Tighten bolts finger tight. Install timing belt onto camshaft sprockets in a counterclockwise direction. Continue installing timing belt, making sure timing belt teeth are fully engaged with all sprockets.

    2. Install timing belt tensioner pulley. Tighten timing belt tensioner pulley bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 N.m).

    3.

NOTE: If tensioner oil has been lost, fill tensioner with Mobil 1 SAE 5W-30 synthetic engine oii through plug hole. Fill to bottom of plug hole only when plunger is fully retracted and pin is installed.

Install rubber end plug in rear of tensioner assembly until flush. Ensure plug is sealed against case.

    4.

NOTE: Ensure actuator bushings and appropriate holes in side plate are clean. DO NOT lubricate bushings.

Install actuator bushing into side plate. Install timing belt actuator and actuator side plate. Tighten side plate bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (27 N.m).

    5. Rotate pulley assembly into timing belt a maximum of 11 ft. lbs. (15 N.m) to allow engagement of actuator shaft into pulley pocket arm socket. Pull the paper clip from the actuator. Retighten pulley assembly counterclockwise to seat pulley into belt.

    6. Tighten both right hand camshaft sprockets (bank closest to firewall) to 96 ft. lbs. (130 N.m). Remove camshaft hold-down from right hand camshaft carrier.

    7. Rotate crankshaft one full turn (360 degrees) clockwise, as viewed from front of engine. Align crankshaft reference marks. See Fig. 3. Make sure both right hand camshaft flat spots are down. Tighten both left hand camshaft sprockets (bank closest to radiator) to 96 ft. lbs. (130 N.m). Remove camshaft hold-down from left hand camshaft carrier.

    8. Rotate engine clockwise (as viewed from front) 2 times to seat belt and verify correct valve timing. DO NOT reverse rotation. Make sure both camshaft flat spots are up on one bank and down on opposing bank.

    9. Install camshaft carrier covers. Install breather hose and crankcase vent onto rear cover. Install timing belt covers.

    10. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Refill cooling system with 50/50 mix of water and coolant. Open air bleed valve on thermostat housing while filling cooling system. Adjust drive belts to proper tension.

Does my timing belt need to be changed?

I have a 97 Honda Accord and I bought my car used at a 100,000 miles or so. I don't know if the timing belt was ever changed by the previous owner, I didn't think to ask at the time. I really don't have any problems with my car, and I don't hear any abnormal noises coming from my engine. Is there anyway I can tell if it needs to be replaced? Or if I take it to a shop, will they be able to tell me if it needs to be replaced? And how much would it cost me to replace it? I just want to know ahead of time so nothing happens.Does my timing belt need to be changed? The short answer - yes

Timing belt is not something you want to guess at. Your car will come to a halt if the timing belt snaps

    The long-winded reading is at:

http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/us703Does my timing belt need to be changed?Since there is no sticker to say if it has been changed I'd say it's time. Hondas are ruined if they break and you will have no warning whatsoever. Everything is fine right up till it's too late. Just about any Honda you see in a junkyard has a broken cam and bent valves.Does my timing belt need to be changed? If it has cracks across the sides of the belt then yes! The belt shouldnt cost too much.Does my timing belt need to be changed? It not only goes by mileage, it goes by age. There is no warning that the belt is going to break. If it breaks the motor is called a zero tolerance motor, which means if you are on the freeway and the belt breaks, odds are that instead of just replacing the belt you will have to have the head pulled off to have the valves replaced. A timing belt job with water pump will run 500 to 800 dollars at a reputable shop. GET IT CHANGED NOW!Does my timing belt need to be changed? Most all auto manufacturers recommend the timing belt be changed at 70,000 miles. It is belt, like the accessory drive belt and does wear out with heat cycling and being stretched over time. I've seen them actually lose cogs and just spin. One Honda that came in the shop had the belt get so hot from just slipping that it melted the plastic timing cover, creating more expense in replacement.

The timing belt itself is less than $50.00. Expect about 3 hours labor to remove and replace it, so probably about $210 - $300 in labor costs, too.Does my timing belt need to be changed? You could go a long time without breaking a belt, or it could happen tomorrow. They have a recommended lifetime to keep you from trashing half of your valves suddenly.

You usually can't tell just from looking at it unless it is REALLY close to breaking, (already starting to come apart)

If you don't care, don't worry. If you do care, change it. The cost of a belt is far lower than the cost of a new set of valves and the engine work required from a broken belt.Does my timing belt need to be changed? If I recall correctly the replacement interval is 60,000 miles or 90,000 miles

If your car came with an owners manual check it for the correct interval.

My point being if the interval was 60,000 then its due at 120,000 anyway.

On the other hand if its due at 90,000 then it should have been done 10,000 miles ago. Either way when you have it done replace the water pump and the belt tensioner and idler pulleys. hope this helps.Does my timing belt need to be changed?I'm not sure but maybe your car has a timing chain if that's the case then you don't need to change it. Maybe you mean serpentine belt those do wear out and need to be changed. Take your car to an Auto Zone and they will check it out for free. They won't try to sell you repairs you don't need like those shady auto repair shops sometimes do.Does my timing belt need to be changed?Well you could tell if it needed changed ur car could possibley be lackin power but yeah i would get it changed any ways with tht many miles and it many cost no more than $100..Does my timing belt need to be changed?Consumer Reports catalog these type of issues. Buy a subscription for a few months and look your vehicle up. See when most have required this fix. Scheduling an appointment on your terms is way more convenient than towing and maybe having to have it done just before payday - you know how this goes.Does my timing belt need to be changed?Go to your repair shop and have that belt changed this afternoon or you will be calling the auto wreckers to drag it of the road. You are playing with dynamite. This is not a valves free engine, a broken belt will destroy it on the spot. If you don't have the cash today borrow it. Much cheaper than replacing the engine.Does my timing belt need to be changed? It probably was changed

Replacing timing belt and Serpentine belt on 1999 Mercury Villager?

I have a 1999 Mercury Villager and have changed oil religiously and have never had a single problem out of this van.It has 165k miles on it and the timing belt and serpentine belt have never been changed. My question is does this van have 2 seperate belts? Timing an serpentine ? and approx how much would each cost to have changed at a service station?(I gave it to my daughter and i need to do a few things to it to help her out) Thanks for help.Replacing timing belt and Serpentine belt on 1999 Mercury Villager? It doesn't have a timing belt. It uses a chain which is not a scheduled replacement item.

It does use a serpentine belt for the alternator, AC and pumps. The belt costs around 40 to 50 bucks, and installation would be about the same.

Have you ever had plugs and wires replaced? what about filters? A coolant (antifreeze) flush and fill is probably a good idea as well.Replacing timing belt and Serpentine belt on 1999 Mercury Villager? This is a NISSAN engine. EXCELLENT!! BUt, you must use ONLY approved coolant form the dealership, NOT the green stuff. Nissan makes it's OWN coolant. Use that!!! If you have been smart enough to use synthetic oil, you will have a keeper for YEARS to come!!

Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?

i have a 1998 chevy lumina ltz. yesterday the timing belt broke. i bought a new one and i have a friend who says he can do it. my concern is the belt being put back on correctly. the man at kregan, where i bought the belt said as long as he's done it before it's not that hard. just make sure he has something to lift the alternator to relieve the pressure.

has anyone ever done this kind of job? how hard is it? oh one more thing, how much of a difference does it make if my engine is sideways? when i've taken my car in before i was told that it was sideways. Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?Okay I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not your timing belt that broke. That's actually in the engine and covered by a metal plate(if you have one at all, I believe that your car actually has a timing chain.). You wouldn't know if that broke just by looking at it and it goes no where near the alternator. I think you are talking about the serpentine belt. And yes that's relatively easy to replace, so let your friend take a crack at it.

Your engine is %26quot;sideways%26quot; because your car is a front wheel drive. All front wheel drives are like that. It's really not that big of a deal anymore. Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?if you have the tools and skill, is very simple. but if not, better of have the shop do. it won't cost too muchIs a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop? Its not to hard to put on. My parents had the same car and we had to do it once. It took us too people tho because we had to pry it on.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?It is sideways because it is front wheel drive. If you can afford it I would take it in. You may be able to do it yourself however it is not really worth it unless you are really broke. Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop? It's a big job, and one that has to be done right. I'd take it to the shop.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?if your timing belt broke it most likely damgaed your heads horribly. Meaning your going to have to replace more than the timing belt. I would take it to a mechanic just to make certain your heads were not damaged, but i would give you a good 90% chance they are unfortunately. Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?If your car is frontwheel drive, then your engine is mounted %26quot;sideways%26quot; in the engine compartment.

In general, timing belts on FWD cars are labor intensive to replace, because there are a lot of things in the way that have to be removed.

Don't attempt to do it without the shop manual for the car.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?I would take it to the shop because the person has to also make sure the timing is correct on your car.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?If u had to ask then take it to the shopIs a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?Being a GM it's going to be a pain because you can't get to anything. But once you get everything out of the way it's a snap. You just have to line up the timing marks on the cam and crank shafts and put it on.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop? Not hard at all. Get a book so you make sure you do it right but I have done it before, I don't work on cars and I put it on fineIs a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop? You last two sentences tell me that you need to take the car to a mechanic. Installing a timing belt is one of those mechanical jobs where you need some expertise to do it right, and doing it wrong can be costly. I hope it wasn't an automotive professional that used the term %26quot;side wise%26quot; on your Lumina's engine. What you have is a front wheel drive car with a %26quot;transverse%26quot; engine. A common configuration in newer cars.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?Only let this guy do this if he really has. sounds like you have a transverse engine, sideways. you dont have but maybe 5-6 inches of space to work. there are special tools made he might nout have. this isnt a 72 nova.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?trust me a lumina engine, I would take it to a shop. The engine compartment is too tight your engine is sideways for a front wheel drive car.

If your experience in auto repair try it. If not, you have to make sure you don't loose your timing when you change the belt.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?ive done several belts, was you engin running when it broke? you may have valve dammage, id take it to a shop where you could a get professional opinion, and get a warranty. timimg belts arnt as easy as they look.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?If you are a good mechanic, fix it. Otherwise take it to a garageIs a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?A timing belt is very serious. If you are precise you could seriously damage your car. I would take it to a professional. Look at it this way, the belt might've cost you.......$60. You may pay.......$250 for labor. If you do it yourself and mess it up, you will have to pay another $60 and $250 and more money for repairs. Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?I agree with most of the others in here. If there's any way you can afford it, have a (professional) do it. The sepentine belt, on the other hand, is usually quite simple. My engine is longitudinal, and it can be done with only one or two sockets! Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?Take it to the shop. That way if anything goes wrong-you can pin it on them instead of your friend.

It's not a simple job, usually and it sometimes involves disconnecting a motor mount to access things on a transverse (sideways) engine.

The camshaft-to-crankshaft timing marks also have to be reset correctly or the engine will not run, or will run very poorly.

If your friend has specific knowledge of the procedure and can do the job cheaper than a shop-let him/her have at it, but unless he's absolutely sure what to do-take it to the shop.Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?Timing belt or fan belt? Seems to me you're describing replacing a fan belt which is a piece of cake. There should be a diagram some place under the hood to show you the correct routing of the belt. All you will need is a rachet (3/8ths drive if I remember right) to release the pressure on the belt tensioner to get the new fan belt over the pulleys. If it's the timing chain at the front of the block then that's another thing. It's not hard just time consuming and requires removal of a lot of sh*t. Not impossible but you will need a variety of tools and some mechanical skill. Either job I'd tackle myself instead of taking it to a shop and paying 70 plus dollars an hour labor charges. Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?timing belts are not that hard to put on.just put your crank to top dead center and turn your cam to the guage hole and put a drill bit in the hole to keep the cam gear from moving and put on the belt, after you losen the tensioner. Is a timing belt hard to put on yourself or should i take my car to the shop?take it to a shop

  • At least how many kilometers do we have to replace the timing belt and water pump?

i have mazda protege 2001 1.6L with 156,000 kilometer on it, is it the right time before summer to change the timing belt and water pump? for me this car runs like brand new since i change main control relay....thank you very much...canadian answer only please...At least how many kilometers do we have to replace the timing belt and water pump?Woah woah woah. You don't have to replace those until they break (or at least until they start making funny noises)! Who knows, you might be able to get 200,000 km out of those. Ok, so when do you know when it is time to get it replaced...when your car starts making a funny noise. Both the water pump and the timing chain will make a clicking noise when they are on thier last leg. When that noise starts happeneing, then I suggest you take your vehicle into a shop and have them replace the necessary parts.

And don't be fooled by the dealerships. Toyota especially will tell you that those parts need to be replaced even if you only have 50,000 km on your vehicle. It is something fast and easy for them to replace, but they can charge you $300 for it. Wait until it breaks...don't throw your money away.At least how many kilometers do we have to replace the timing belt and water pump?Check you owners manual. The timing blet is normally changed every 100,000 km. If your water pump is operated by the timing belt then it would probably best to replace it at the same time.At least how many kilometers do we have to replace the timing belt and water pump?well in the book sez 80.000km, but normally people wait untill 100.000km.. now got this guy here even raised it to 150.000..

change it mann.. timing belt doesnt giv any signal or a hint.. they just snapp..wic is 23 times more cash than a normal belt replacement..

*How much will a mechanic charge to do this?

*does the engine need to be taken out?

*does the water pump need to be replaced as well

My car wont start its a Toyota st141 model the timing belt is not turning at all?

i need too know what has broken it cant be the timing belt as it is still tight, i have not got a book on the car, the engine turns over fine but isntturning the belt does anyone no how to fix it pleaseMy car wont start its a Toyota st141 model the timing belt is not turning at all?If you can peep through, just look through the timing belt. Some times it breaks and twists and overlaps where you cannot reach until you have a clear view and pull through. It all depends when was last your car came to an halt. Did you hear some nasty click, if not it is not the timing belt, if yes; were you in motion, if so definitely your valves bent, costy to replace these, it all depends how many valves gone. The possibility is only the belt was worn out hence broke, if so, it is not that expensive to change but it is a skilled job and time consuming too. If at all you are determined to do it yourself, then my advice is buy the book and do it accordingly, this way you will save time and will not be held up any where. For professional mechanics it is a two hours job. Good luck.My car wont start its a Toyota st141 model the timing belt is not turning at all?A toyota wont start.... That is a question? My car wont start its a Toyota st141 model the timing belt is not turning at all?Sounds like a broken timming belt sprocket or a broken cam shafts.you need to get a repair manual.Try and not to keep cranking the engine there is a 0 tollerance on these engines that means you could smack the top of the piston on the valve and cause more damage

How many miles will the timing belt in my 1994 Honda Accord EX last? I have a 155,000 miles on the original?

I have never changed the 'timing belt' in my 1994 Honda Accord EX. I have been informed by the dealer that the 'timing belt' should have been changed at 90,000 miles. As of right now I am 65,000 miles over the recommended change cycle. How long can I honestly expect this 'timing belt' to last or am I driving on borrowed time. Best is not to wait for it to break as it may cost you more than just replacing the belt.

Your choice is whether to continue to take the risk of driving the vehicle before you spend the inevitable or await the breakage and the consequences it brings.

How do i successfully setup the timing on a 1993 2.2l accord after changing the timing belt?

Please! Can any body help me with some instruction how to change timing belt?

But when it comes the lexus RX 300 2002 ,I never change one.

%26quot;My main concern%26quot;I want to know if it requires a special tool and how many hours! Please! Can any body help me with some instruction how to change timing belt?No special tools. It's hard to get to. For an experienced tech, it will maybe take 1.5 hrs.

Just disassemble everything around the timing belt cover. Then take the cover off. Then remove the tensioner. Then put the belt on and put it back together. No special tools.

How do I change the timing belt on my 1990 Honda Civic?

Any experts? I'm good with cars but, I have never changed a timing belt?

Can you explain in detail how to do it?

thanksHow do I change the timing belt on my 1990 Honda Civic?1) get some 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, sockets and wrenches. and a 1/16%26quot; allen wrench, small bench vice.

    2) disconnect battery + and tape a rag on it.

2.1) remove power steering pump and set aside. this can usually be done without disconnecting lines.

    2.2) remove alternator.

    3) turn engine with socket on crank (17mm or 19mm) until timing marks are t.d.c.

    4) remove timing cover (10mm socket) needed for this should be 8 or 10 small bolts.

    5) dont forget the 2 at the oil pan connection below (12mm socket)remove crank pulleys (17mm socket)

    6) once covers are off locate tensioner and insert 1/16%26quot; allen wrench in hole on side of tensioner this will save lots of grief later. and then remove. (12mm socket)

    7) on the valve sprockets there will be a dimple that you line up with a notch on top of cyl head usually at 12:00 position.

    8) remove timing belt.

    9) reverse order to re assemble.

    10) oh darn the allen wrench wont fit because belt is too streched or broken! (no worries, compress in small vise and put allen wrench in make sure that you put it in the correct side or you'll have a problem when you go to remove it after the new belt is on)

    11) just for future reference get yourself a Clymers auto manual. about $20 but worth it.

    12) also i'd replace your water pump while you have it apart because that is a pain to get to.

Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?

I've never had a vehicle long enough to need a belt, so I don't know how reliable a timing belt is, but I have 89k on it and plan on doing a wp at the same time; should I safely be able to take it to 90k without a problem? I know that the recommended interval for this engine is 90k, but I believe it is an interference engine. Opinions? Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?Change the belt! Particularly since it is an interference engine. Timing belts are relatively durable, but unlike timing chains, they were not designed to last the entire life of your car. Belts warp and tear over time.

I had a timing belt go out on my previous car (17 year old Toyota with over 165k on the odometer at the time). Luckily it was a free-wheeling (non-interference) engine and there was no valve damage. However, I was stranded on the side of the road, had to pay for towing, and wasn't able to make it to work that day because of it. If the belt is expected to last 90,000 miles, I would personally probably change it every 85,000 just to be safe. You wouldn't run a car on almost-bald tires, would you?

Also, change the water pump at the same time. Might as well since you will be in there anyway.

Better safe than sorry, I always say. I find Toyotas to be extremely reliable, but even the most reliable engines will fail if not properly maintained and cared for. 1,000 miles may not make much of a difference, but all it takes is a stroke of bad luck to screw up a perfectly good engine. No sense in procrastinating.

Best of luck. Take care of that truck and it will take care of you. The timing chain on my car is supposed to be changed every 150,000 miles... I'm at ~305,500 on the original chain. Of course I inspect it every year when I adjust the valves, but it's still in great shape. Check the belt to make sure it's not loose, cracking, or lost its rubbery feel. If it seems okay, go ahead and wait till 90k miles if that's what's recommended. Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?ive driven cars 50k past their recomended belt change....of course i dident care about those cars,my advice is change itIs there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?If it was me, I would just go ahead and change it at 89k. I would kick myself in the *** if I decided to hold off and the belt broke. Broken timing belt=sending the pistons up into the valves=very bad news and lots of money for repairs. This is just my humble opinion, do what you and your wallet allows you too.Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?Any time you have this kind of decision to make ask what is your risk vs reward

    Risk = broken timing belt

Reward = one month of time

Whether you get it at 89K or 90K miles, are you going to hold it for another 90K? If not then you'll only do one change so then then just get it now.

    ===

My Audi is recommended for 90K. But everybody is screaming about timing belts breaking as low as 70K. So I had it change at 60K miles. I figure I would have to do it sooner or later, and I don't plan on holding the car till 120K (another 60K). So either way I would only do 1 change so why risk riding it for so long?

    ===

Besides how dumb are you going to feel if the belt broke so close to your change period (especially after asking yourself this question)?

Keep the paper work. My brother's timing belt broke few hundred mile out because the %26quot;pro%26quot; made it too tight.

Good Luck.Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?I'm not big up on cars now a days but i do own a 1974 Chevy Nova. When I bought it I dug straight in to the engine to find out anything that may have looked strange. I didn't notice any Thing until about the 5th time i drove it when i smelt something strange. I pulled over and popped the hood to find MY timing chain unwrapped and gnarled around the alternator. This was not a good thing. It was easily replaceable. Although it is almost 35 years old I new right when I got it to replace the belts for ever thing. What I think would be a helpful bit of information is how long you personally have had this vehicle. Oh and to answer your question. Yes you should change your timing belt. In my past I find that if I ask questions about something (especially cars) its more than likely that it is a yes :) besides it never hurts to replace something. Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?The recommended mileage has a safety factor build in so you are very safe going to 90K, I would not go too much over that.

  • Timing belt noise, I think! What can be wrong and how serious is it?

I recently had my timing belt changed for my Protege, Mazda. After having it changed and one week later, there seems to be a loud belt grinding noise after the car has been driven for at least 15 minutes or so. After the engine is shut off and cools for a hour or so and then restarted, the noise is no longer there, until the car is driven again for at least 15 minutes and the noise then reoccurs. However, when the engine is cool and at idle, I can hear some mildly soft sqeaking noises..... What can possibly be the problem and how serious is this problem? Could my timing belt be too tight? The timing belt, tensioner, and idler controler were all changed already.

Oh yes, before my timing belt was replaced, it jumped because the tensioner was loose. Before the timing belt jumped, it was making this exact same noise as now, which is a loud slapping grinding noise. Any help will be much appreciated!Timing belt noise, I think! What can be wrong and how serious is it?Sounds like the timing belt tensioner, This roller bearing should be replaced along with the timing belt.

Car cools down - bearing cools and stops squeeking.
