Its a 97 Toyota Corolla -126,000 miles. The timing belt was not changed...but the mechanic asked 500$ for the same. the 1.3 and 1.6 petrol engines, and the 2.0 diesel engines, are all interference engines, so I would suggest that you have the timing belt changed as soon as possible if any of these engines are fitted to your car.

The 1.3 and 1.6 petrol engines should take no longer than 2 hours to replace the timing belt, and the 2.0 diesel engine no longer than 3 hours.

Just for the record, its city driving that places the most strain on the belt. Long journeys at a constant respectable speed place less strain. How long can my car run without changing timing belt?forget the mileage..the belt is THIRTEEN years old dude. In any event it'll be quite expensive; however my view is (assuming you want to keep the car) get it done at Chrysler.

  • How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt?

My car's manual recommends a timing belt replaced at 105,000 miles and I am now at about 108,000. How soon do I really need to change the belt? Am I on 'borrowed' time? Or will I probably be fine for a while since it's not an exact science that the belts will fail after 105,000 miles. How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt? Why would you want to stretch your luck? Do you have any idea what the big buck cost would be should the belt break?

Jot this down as a serious consideration when buying your next car. Don't buy a car with old fashioned cost cutting technology such as a timing belt. Timing chains last 250,000 - 500,000 miles. How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt?Do it soon b/c you don't want it to snap and when your car is still running the engine can get major damage. my honest advice would b to change ur timing belt now unless u have the money for a new engine since that is what will need to b replaced if u don't..........

i have seen tons of timing belts actually fail pre 105k due to poor maintenance and rough driving....so basically unless ur a little old lady that does 10 under the speed limit and has oil changed at 3k exactly....then ur driving on borrowed time....How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt? You should do it as soon as possible. If it breaks, it will cause a lot of upper engine damage.

Hope this helps. How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt?Well that depends on whether your car has an interference or non interference engine. SOME ENGINES WILL GET DAMAGED AND SOME WILL NOT if the timing belt goes bad

If it is an interference engine (where the valves actually open in the same path of the piston) then you absolutely should change your timing belt. If it fails, there will be huge amounts of damage to valves, lifters, etc and require very expensive repairs.

If your car has a non interference engine and the timing belt goes bad, then there will be little additional damage and you would simply get a new belt and maybe water pump installed. In this case you can delay getting it replaced.

If you don't know which is which, post the type of car, year and size engine and I will try and follow up to let you know. How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt?100,000 is an Industry standard. Violation of this is begging to spend many dollars. Some cars OK to lose belt, no problem. Some cars cost a whole lot of money losing belt. All cars are not the same. hope this helps, luv ser

Hi, I have a 2002 PT cruiser with 120,000 miles. Just wondering who and where is the best affordable place to have the timing belt replaced and around how much should I expect to pay. Also should anything else get replaced at the same time. Thanks for your help.Best Place to have a timing belt on a PT Crusiser Replaced?Any reputable repair shop can do this task. Call around and get quotes. Expect to pay $50 - $60 per hour labor. They should have a labor estimating program that will state how long the job should take. There is no prescribed service interval for the timing chain. If you had a timing belt, for that model year you would change it every 60,000 miles or 4 years.

How much does it normally cost if you want to replace your old timing belt?

My timing belt broke and costing me around 800 bucks. I wonder if I'd replace before it was too late and broke, how much would it cost? A lots less?

I think I got oil contamination, I broke my timing belt when I refill too much of the oil pressure. How much does it normally cost if you want to replace your old timing belt? You should get at least 3 estimates before getting the vehicle fixed, if it's not too late - that $ 800 is ridiculous !!! It should be at the most $ 200 - you may be getting taken advantage of because of being female. The timing belt breaking has nothing to do with the level of the oil - they just wear out after a period of time and need to be changed, just like regular maintenance items......do not pay the 800 if you can avoid it !!!!!!!!How much does it normally cost if you want to replace your old timing belt?It depends on the make/model of the car as well as whether you have the dealership or an independent mechanic perform the job. $800 is not outrageous and have heard of higher prices. I've typically have seen prices around $500 at independent shops.

Don't lose sleep over this. Next time follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual. How much does it normally cost if you want to replace your old timing belt?I am not sure what vehicle you have but generally speaking the repair for the belt should be around 250.00 at the most. Now if there is damage done due the belt breaking maybe a factor. But to pay that amount you spoke of is high. However depending on the make it is possible. Stealerships are typically higher but you usually get a good repair. I would price other repair shops for an estimate before paying 800.00. Over filling the oil may have cause the belt to break if there was oil bypassed into the combustion chamber causing the engine to %26quot;hydraulic%26quot;, but I doubt that is the case you would have a lot more damage then a broken belt. You would have to put in a extreme amount of oil to do this. If it was say just a quart over it is doubtful that you would have hydrauliced the engine. Call around and talk to people that have knowledge of good repair shops.

How much does it cost to replace a timing belt in a Kia Rio?

I'm considering buying a 2003 Kia Rio as a commuter car for school. The asking price is $4500. It's a good car and the owner said he recently had the timing belt replaced. I've read that replacing timing belts seems to be a consistent problem with Kias. How much does something like that usually cost? I don't want to be pumping a ton of money into a car that I'm not paying a whole lot for in the first place. How much does it cost to replace a timing belt in a Kia Rio?Timing belt replacement normally run approximately $200 - 400 depending on the shop. Some shop may suggest new water pump and/ or timing components since it saves on labor to do everything when its apart in the same area.

How much would a new timing belt and water pump cost?

3.1 hours labor for timing belt ($79.23)

crankshaft oil seal, add 0.3 to timing belt labor ($15.27)

camshaft oil seal, add 0.2 to timing belt labor ($19.43)

waterpump, add 0.5 to belt labor ($122.02)

*all prices US dollarsHow much would a new timing belt and water pump cost?is your water pump leaking NO then dont replace it

now the timing belt on the other hand that going to run some money like 800 bucksHow much would a new timing belt and water pump cost?If you just replace the timing belt and nothing else, a shop will probably charge approximately $400 for parts and labor. The timing belt itself only costs around $20, but it's the labor that is costly.

A true timing belt job includes the following:

--Changing the timing belt of course.

    --Changing all external drive belts.

    --Changing the waterpump.

    --Changing the valve cover gasket.

    --Changing the crank shaft seal

    --Changing the cam shaft seal.

    --Changing the coolant.

That is a true timing belt job! That will cost approximately $700, but it is worth it. I know many people who just change the timing belt and water pump at most, then in a few thousand miles, the crank shaft seal starts leaking oil and hitting the exhaust and smoking really bad, then they have to take it back to the shop and replace the crank shaft seal, which costs about $250 because it is right next to the timing belt and it takes a lot of labor/time to go back an replace the seal. In fact that happened to a 1993 Subaru Impreza I once owned. The guy before me replaced the timing belt, but not the seals and once the seal started leaking, it was really bad and I had to take it to a shop and basically do a whole new timing belt job, because I said, the seals are right next to the timing belt. The mechanic even showed me that the timing belt looked nearly new, but the previous owner did not do the seals, so I had to spend hundreds of dollars and do it the right way.

Same with the waterpump. if you just change the timing belt for $400 and forget the waterpump, then shortly after the waterpump goes bad, the mechanic will charge you another $350 to back in there and replace it. Do EVERYTHING as I noted above all at once and you will have a pretty trouble-free running car for a good while. Also keep the reciepts as that will greatly increase the selling price of your car, believe me.

Remember, replacing just the timing belt itself doesn't do you any good, when a little later down the road seal or water pump goes bad and will be paying twice the cost to have a mechanic take the time to go back all the way down and fix a simple seal that cost not more than $20 had you replaced it when you did the timing belt. If not, plan on spending another labor charge of $300.How much would a new timing belt and water pump cost? The only way to find out for sure would be to take the car to an auto repair shop for an estimate.

Expect a very expensive repair. How much would a new timing belt and water pump cost?$550 or so. If you can get the water pump from autozone and give it to the mechanic, you'll save some there.

How much does repairing a timing belt break on a 93 honda del sol usually run if nothin else is damaged?

Timing belt broke on my 1993 honda del sol. Im assuming nothing else was damaged because it broke while sitting idle at a light. Does anyone know cars well enough or have had this happen to them to throw a # at me... and heck i'll sell it if anyones interested..lolHow much does repairing a timing belt break on a 93 honda del sol usually run if nothin else is damaged?well, you have to do is pay about $400 - $500 to install a new timing belt, and water pump. After the belt installation, you would need to get a engine compression test ($100) to make sure that there was no engine damage. If compression test shows good engine condition, then you are done.

Otherwise, you will have to tear least the cylinder head and rebuild. That is going to cost ye. around $1500. And if after tearing the head, piston damaged is detected (you can only tell when you lift up the cylinder head) then you are looking at short block rebuild (another $1500)How much does repairing a timing belt break on a 93 honda del sol usually run if nothin else is damaged?try putting it backHow much does repairing a timing belt break on a 93 honda del sol usually run if nothin else is damaged?Bent valves happen even at idle, it doesn't take high rpms. Either check valve stem height or better yet do a cylinder leak test. If it was my car I'd pull the head and take a look at the pistons for sign of valve contact, any little nick in the piston and you need to take the valves out and spin them in a drill to check for wobble. Replace the bent ones.

The overhead single cam is driven by a chain that lasts for the life of the car. No replacement ever needed unless you are doing a full engine rebuild. How do I do the timing belt on a 93 jeep sport cherokee?Doesn't have a timing belt. It has a timing chain. Usually they don't need to be replaced, but they should be inspected for excess slack as the chain will stretch over time. If there's too much slack in the chain it will eventually jump the cogs and knock the engine out of time, or may eventually fail, so its best to check it on high mileage engines. However under most cases they don't need replaced. How do I do the timing belt on a 93 jeep sport cherokee?I think you thinking of the serpentine belt. I was told to also change the water pump while having the timing belt changed. I have 110 K miles on the car. I guess it's about time. How much should I expect to pay for a new timing belt for a 1997 Honda Civic DX Hatchback? This depends where you go to,

i have a 99 Civic Dx (same engine as yours, currently with 167k miles, had the belt changed at about 130ish k miles)

The belt it self is cheap its about $50, but since its somewhat labor intensive to get to and change the belt, some people will rip you off.

I live in southern california, specifically the san fernando valley,

I went to Kolbe Honda on Reseda blvd in Northridge,CA ( i pretended to know nothing about honda's to see if the guy would give me a fair price or not) He said %26quot; its going to cost more money because yours in Dual Cam%26quot; and this was a factory certified tech supposedly , (i was laughing in my head because i know for sure its a single cam [d16y7]) anyways he quoted me more than $850 for labor alone, not including the water pump. (in my opinion a total rip-off, and idiot).

Next to get another estimate i went to a Honda/Acura Specialist shop they quoted $450 including the water pump but not the belt.

I still wanted to see if i could get it cheaper so i still shopped around and called another dealership further away (about 100 miles away).

I went to Robertson Palmdale Honda, The guy KNEW what he was talking about and gave me a estimate of $300 over the phone, when i went to the service department after tax it was $325 (me supplying the belt.)

all in all it cost me $375 for the labor including all necessary parts including the water pump.

point is shop around or else you could get stuck paying more for the same service, BTW all 3 were factory certified honda technicians. How much should I expect to pay for a new timing belt for a 1997 Honda Civic DX Hatchback? If you go to the dealer, prepare to pay big money. You can go to a good Honda specialist and have it done for around $300. This should include a new timing belt and ALL OTHER BELTS, a new water pump, water pump gasket, thermostat and thermostat gasket. The reason the other items should be included is that they are normal wear items that are easily replaced when a timing belt service is being done. How much should I expect to pay for a new timing belt for a 1997 Honda Civic DX Hatchback?around 350 for all

How likely is your engine to be ruined if your timing belt goes out?

I asked a question a few minutes ago about my car dying and now it won't even try to start , it just clanks 1 time when I try to start it...all the lights work fine..could it be the timing belt...it is a 2002 Kia Rio?How likely is your engine to be ruined if your timing belt goes out? It's not a question of likelyhood, really. If the car has an interference engine, and it breaks, you are probably hosed.

It sounds like that might be what happened to you. The clank might be one piston hitting an open valve.

I guess you shouldn't make it clank any more. How likely is your engine to be ruined if your timing belt goes out?the 2002 Kia Rio is an interference engine. That means if the timing belt does break then it is possible for the valves to come into contact with the pistons and damage the engine. Yes it could be the timing belt, it should be changed every 60,000 miles to prevent this from happening. How likely is your engine to be ruined if your timing belt goes out?Yep, that happens alot on Kias.... probably jumped teeth or the belt broke, on a positive note the valves will not hit the pistons and bend, Kias are made like that.... I just did a timing belt on a Sportage that it broke and the same thing happened to the engine, just up and died. How likely is your engine to be ruined if your timing belt goes out?It depends on if it is an interference engine or not. Alot of times engines ARE interference engines anymore with the higher compression ratios that are used (in comparison with 70s and 80s cars)How likely is your engine to be ruined if your timing belt goes out?Even if it's an interference engine, the valves all have springs on then, and pretty strong ones, that will snap that valve back in the head, away from the piston. Bending a valve on a stock engine, with hydraulic lifters, doesn't happen all that much any more.

Should have to replace the belt, with the cam timing %26amp; crank position set, and off you go. An oil change wouldn't hurt, tho...How likely is your engine to be ruined if your timing belt goes out?Don't crank it over, you just might have dropped a valve when your timing belt broke, better see if kia can fix it

How much should it cost to replace 2005 Honda Civic water pump and timing belt?

My 2005 Civic ran hot during 98 degree weather- yesterday- one time- with a/c running. When I took it in this morning, they could not find a problem but recommended I replace the timing belt and water pump (car has 101,000 miles). Does this sound logical? How much should it cost to replace 2005 Honda Civic water pump and timing belt?Page 149 of the owner's manual says to replace the timing belt at 110,000 miles.

Page 160 says the timing belt should be replaced at the intervals shown in the maintenance schedule [on page 149]. But replace the belt at 60,000 miles (100,000 km) if you regularly drive your vehicle in one or more of these conditions:

In very high temperatures (over 110掳F, 43掳C).

In very low temperatures (under 20掳F, 29掳C).

It cost me $300 to have the belt replaced on my 96 Accord at an independent mechanic who specializes with Hondas. Most dealers in my area want anywhere from $650 to $800 to do it.

It won't have any effect on the car running hot so I would suggest replacing the thermostat and inspect all the hoses and flush the cooling system. How much should it cost to replace 2005 Honda Civic water pump and timing belt?it does sound logical. you should change the timing belt every 70-80000 miles. your water pump is probably on its way out.How much should it cost to replace 2005 Honda Civic water pump and timing belt? You're overdue. It will run apprx $800 - $1,000

Shop around. How much should it cost to replace 2005 Honda Civic water pump and timing belt?$800-1,000? Sure if you go to the Honda stealership to do it. A mechanic should be able to do it for less than $600. When I had my CR-V's timing belt changed, it was $525. So for less than $600, you should still be getting the timing belt, waterpump, seals changed. Also, since they are doing that, they also change your other belts at the same time. By the way, your Civic's timing belt should be changed every 110,000 miles according to Honda so you shouldn't even have to change it just yet.

The overheating could be a bad thermostat. Are your fans working as they should? Do you have a coolant leak? Check your coolant level. There are many things that would cause overheating. If it is your waterpump, then do the entire timing belt service. If not, don't bother with it and save your money unless you want it done now. That's my 2 cents worth. How much should it cost to replace 2005 Honda Civic water pump and timing belt?for the shop about $800

    yourself about $100

If you do do it yourself be suree to use a manual(you cann get one from the dealership), and consult someone who has done it before. How much should it cost to replace 2005 Honda Civic water pump and timing belt?yes, about 800-900 at the dealer. call all dealers for discount, they usually have like 10% off for timing belt job.How much should it cost to replace 2005 Honda Civic water pump and timing belt?Don't listen to everyone who is saying do it yourself. If you cant diagnose those problems yourself you arent ready to replace your timing belt. if you dont have your timing right can will blow your engine within 30 seconds and have to replace the whole thing. You shouldn't need a new belt but if you have a mechanic that is a friend of yours have them take a look at it. Alot of shops try to rip people of and sell them things they dont need, dont fall into their traps.

How do you know and check if your timing belt has broken? I have 96 Monte Carlo z34.?

If the timing belt broke while you were driving, how would you know? And whats the age cost to get it fixed. How do you know and check if your timing belt has broken? I have 96 Monte Carlo z34.?The easiest way to check for a broken timing belt is to remove the oil filler cap on the valve cover and watch for overhead cam movement under the valve cover while turning the crankshaft. If there is no cam movement when the crankshaft is turned then the timing belt is broken. But I would recommend removing the timing belt cover to check the belt because turning the crankshaft too much if the belt is broken can do catastrophic engine damage if it is not already damaged. The engine in that 1996 Monte Carlo Z34 is the 3.4L V6 LQ1 engine with twin dual cams on each head and the timing belt on that engine is a bear to change. The flat rate labor time guide to replace that timing belt is 4.5 hours, while the labor time guide to replace most other GM timing belts is between 2 and 3 hours. But if you didn't change that belt at the recommended 60,000 mile intervals and the belt broke while the engine was running, then it's a fairly safe bet that the engine is scrap now. Being an interference engine and having 4 overhead cams, there is little to no chance of avoiding catastrophic piston and valve damage if that timing belt broke while the engine was running. How do you know and check if your timing belt has broken? I have 96 Monte Carlo z34.?for 1 the engine would not tick over. the cost to replace is cheaper to repair so if you think the timing belt may slip replace it. to replace water pump, belt and labour would be cheaper than replace the cylinder heads, valves and so on. cost not sure as in europe so not familiar with US servicing costsHow do you know and check if your timing belt has broken? How much slack should there be in my timing belt 98 eclipse turbo?

I just noticed that my timing belt seemed a little loose. it is supposed to be very firm? or have a little slack? How can i tighten it up, also how much should i tighten it?

Thanks! How much slack should there be in my timing belt 98 eclipse turbo?OK first off you should only have about 1/4%26quot; of %26quot;play%26quot; in the timing belt. Now if it is loose then you MUST get it replaced. Also you MUST get a new auto tensioner and have it adjusted right or it will never be right. The infamous auto tensioner on these cars are tricky for people who have never dealt with them before. The 95-99 GST and GSX eclipses are the only cars in the world where YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO tighten the tensioner WAIT AT LEAST 15 minutes and re-tighten. If this is not done the belt WILL slip and fail. You really should replace the water pump also as it is under all the belts and pulleys. It will save a major headache in the future if it decides to go out, and a new one is only around $90.How much slack should there be in my timing belt 98 eclipse turbo? If the belt is loose it needs replacing along with the balance belt, tensioner and pulleys. • How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?

The 2000 honda accord still runs great, but I havn't gotten around to change the timing belt. I am waiting till I have enough cash to buy the water pump and the belt. But I am WAY over due for the timing belt change. Do you think I shouldn't drive the car?How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?Get that belt done! Toyota and Honda are the biggest timing belt offenders, but here's the difference. You blow the timing belt on your Toyota, you get towed to the shop and pay for a timing belt replacement. You blow the timing belt on your Honda, you ruin your pistons and valves, so now you're either replacing much of the engine or getting a junkyard engine. The Honda's have what is called an interference engine, which means the pistons crash upward into the heads, damaging internal engine components, the Toyota has a non-interference engine, so the piston stops short of damaging everything. If you completely baby the car while driving, try to keep it running when possible to avoid starting it, and get the freaking timing belt done ASAP, you should be OK, but since its inside the engine, there's no way to know. You might be hanging on by a thread right now or the belt may appear fine. Just get it done, get it done, get it done!!!How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt? It's not dangerous as in the engine is going to explode and kill everybody in the car, but the old timing belt could snap and the engine could stop running at any time. If that happens, the repair bill could for more than just a belt and water pump. If you don't need to drive the car, I'd recommend you wait until you could get the proper maintenance done on it.How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt? Please be careful. I would highly encourage you to get the timing belt replaced ASAP. We own a 1992 Accord with 223K miles. It already had the timing belt changed out once before. We just recently replaced the timing belt yet again, as well as the water pump, belt, etc. Our car is running well right now. If the belt in your Honda breaks, it will cause major damage to the engine. Please do not drive it until you can get it repaired. If you must drive it, drive it gently until you can get it fixed. Good luck, and God bless! How dangerous is it to drive a honda accord with 140,000 miles with the origonal timing belt?you should be fine until you have enough cash, its actually smarter to do the water pump with timing belt... so yeah its a 2000, not like its a 1994. just drive in the city so that if the timing belt does snap, stop the car!!! so that the engine parts inside dont get f**ked up.

If you are hearing noise up front, its probally the waterpump. The chain lasts much longer than a belt does so I doubt it needs a chain. They do get stretched at some point, but on that motor you wont see that happen for many many years. The chain tensioner will go out before that chain fails. even the 6 cyl.

How much does it usually cost to repair a timing belt?

Im in the process of buying a 1995 honda civic, and the owner of it said that he recently put in a new timing belt but the mechanic forgot to put in a washer thus causing it to minorly leak from time to time. Taking it back to the mechanic for a refund is not an option, so what should I do?

Thank youHow much does it usually cost to repair a timing belt? The worst is over. Installing a timing belt takes several hours sicne you must remove motor mounts and know exactly how the belt fits. Hopefully, the previous owner had a genuine Honda belt put in. Either way, the thing to do is go to the Honda dealer and explain that you have a leak and would like the engine inspected. When they determine the fault, have them write it out on an estimate. If it is an oil seal or a sealling washer, they will probably have the part in stock, or they can order it. Use only the Honda part!!! Also, be sure that the coolant in your car is genuine Honda coolant, as well. Anything else will cause major problems on down the road with big repair bills. Whne the timing belt is replaced,a new water pump must be installed at the same time. Try to find out whether or not the mechanic that worked on it used genuine Honda water pump. Hopefully, yes!!How much does it usually cost to repair a timing belt?on a 95 civic, the cost should be no more than $300.How much does it usually cost to repair a timing belt? The belt will run about $40,and most garages charge $60 an hr and it's a 2 hr job,so $ i'd say between 160 and $200,they're gonna charge you more for the belt then if you went and picked it up at the parts store,so buy the belt and then have them install it,this is a ball part figure,so figure on $200.+ call around and find the chepiest ASE certified mechanic to do it.How much does it usually cost to repair a timing belt?It sounds like the water pump is bad and should have been replaced when the belt was replaced. If the belt broke before it was replaced, you have the possibility that the engine valves were bent when they hit the pistons because the car has an %26quot;interference%26quot; type engine. If you want to pursue the deal, I would insist that the owner drive me in the car to the Honda dealer to make sure the engine has not been damaged and is running normally. Remember, private car sales are legally %26quot;as is%26quot; contracts meaning what you see is what you get with no recourse once you buy the car. A complete proper timing belt job is $800 and includes a new water pump, tensioner and idler pulleys.

I STRONGLY recommend having the water pump replaced at the same time.

Main reason is the timing belt drives the pump. if pump goes bad it takes out the timing belt.

Most of the time, its the water pump that causes the belt to go bad on that model.
