Timing belts rarely last more than 100k miles and most are intended to last about 60-80k. If you're going to almost 200k already, you may have a timing chain. These usually last much MUCH longer. Are you sure you have a belt and not a chain?

I went to Kolbe Honda on Reseda blvd in Northridge,CA ( i pretended to know nothing about honda's to see if the guy would give me a fair price or not) He said %26quot; its going to cost more money because yours in Dual Cam%26quot; and this was a factory certified tech supposedly , (i was laughing in my head because i know for sure its a single cam [d16y7]) anyways he quoted me more than $850 for labor alone, not including the water pump. (in my opinion a total rip-off, and idiot).
Next to get another estimate i went to a Honda/Acura Specialist shop they quoted $450 including the water pump but not the belt.
I still wanted to see if i could get it cheaper so i still shopped around and called another dealership further away (about 100 miles away).
I went to Robertson Palmdale Honda, The guy KNEW what he was talking about and gave me a estimate of $300 over the phone, when i went to the service department after tax it was $325 (me supplying the belt.)
all in all it cost me $375 for the labor including all necessary parts including the water pump.

i have a 99 Civic Dx (same engine as yours, currently with 167k miles, had the belt changed at about 130ish k miles)
The belt it self is cheap its about $50, but since its somewhat labor intensive to get to and change the belt, some people will rip you off.
I live in southern california, specifically the san fernando valley,
I went to Kolbe Honda on Reseda blvd in Northridge,CA ( i pretended to know nothing about honda's to see if the guy would give me a fair price or not) He said %26quot; its going to cost more money because yours in Dual Cam%26quot; and this was a factory certified tech supposedly , (i was laughing in my head because i know for sure its a single cam [d16y7]) anyways he quoted me more than $850 for labor alone, not including the water pump. (in my opinion a total rip-off, and idiot).
Next to get another estimate i went to a Honda/Acura Specialist shop they quoted $450 including the water pump but not the belt.
I still wanted to see if i could get it cheaper so i still shopped around and called another dealership further away (about 100 miles away).
I went to Robertson Palmdale Honda, The guy KNEW what he was talking about and gave me a estimate of $300 over the phone, when i went to the service department after tax it was $325 (me supplying the belt.)
all in all it cost me $375 for the labor including all necessary parts including the water pump.

The overheating could be a bad thermostat. Are your fans working as they should? Do you have a coolant leak? Check your coolant level. There are many things that would cause overheating. If it is your waterpump, then do the entire timing belt service. If not, don't bother with it and save your money unless you want it done now. I have 96 Monte Carlo z34.?The easiest way to check for a broken timing belt is to remove the oil filler cap on the valve cover and watch for overhead cam movement under the valve cover while turning the crankshaft. If there is no cam movement when the crankshaft is turned then the timing belt is broken. But I would recommend removing the timing belt cover to check the belt because turning the crankshaft too much if the belt is broken can do catastrophic engine damage if it is not already damaged. The engine in that 1996 Monte Carlo Z34 is the 3.4L V6 LQ1 engine with twin dual cams on each head and the timing belt on that engine is a bear to change. The flat rate labor time guide to replace that timing belt is 4.5 hours, while the labor time guide to replace most other GM timing belts is between 2 and 3 hours. But if you didn't change that belt at the recommended 60,000 mile intervals and the belt broke while the engine was running, then it's a fairly safe bet that the engine is scrap now. Being an interference engine and having 4 overhead cams, there is little to no chance of avoiding catastrophic piston and valve damage if that timing belt broke while the engine was running.How do you know and check if your timing belt has broken? Toyota and Honda are the biggest timing belt offenders, but here's the difference. You blow the timing belt on your Toyota, you get towed to the shop and pay for a timing belt replacement. You blow the timing belt on your Honda, you ruin your pistons and valves, so now you're either replacing much of the engine or getting a junkyard engine. The Honda's have what is called an interference engine, which means the pistons crash upward into the heads, damaging internal engine components, the Toyota has a non-interference engine, so the piston stops short of damaging everything. If you completely baby the car while driving, try to keep it running when possible to avoid starting it, and get the freaking timing belt done ASAP, you should be OK, but since its inside the engine, there's no way to know. If you are hearing noise up front, its probally the waterpump. The chain lasts much longer than a belt does so I doubt it needs a chain. They do get stretched at some point, but on that motor you wont see that happen for many many years. The chain tensioner will go out before that chain fails. even the 6 cyl.

I'm considering buying a Nissan maxima 97 with 90K miles. Owner has everything original on it except tires (including timing belt, battery, muffler etc.) and has maintained it well. I'm not a car guy, but wondering what expenses / or parts I would have to consider changing or replacing? I've heard the timing belt is a must cause it can ruin the engine. Main reason is the timing belt drives the pump. if pump goes bad it takes out the timing belt.
